RadCity 5 Plus Electric Bike Review: Worth the Money?

0

If you’ve been eyeing a new electric bike, you’ve no doubt heard of Rad Power Bikes. This is because it’s the largest e-bike-only brand in North America… and it’s popular as well.

Today, I’ll be showing you my review of the RadCity 5 Plus electric commuter bike. Discover the pros and cons of this sleek but powerful ebike and the essential details you need to know before you buy.

With over 5,000 customer reviews and an overall star rating of 4.7, it’s clear that riders love their RadCity e-bike.

So, I set out on a test ride to find out why. Here’s what I discovered about Rad’s best-selling electric bike. Make sure to watch for a couple of features I haven’t experienced before while reviewing an electric bike!

RadCity 5 Plus Overview

Power and performance are how Rad Power Bikes RadCity e-bike stays on top of the electric commuter bike category. Its solid, ergonomic frame, narrow tires, and ease of riding are the first things I noticed when riding the Rad City 5.

However, there are some cons to consider, in addition to all of its benefits.

Take a look below at the advantages and disadvantages of the newest RadCity to help you decide whether this is the best electric bike for you.

First, there are a couple of things to note. There are two versions… the RadCity 5 Plus High-Step for riders 5’4” to 6’5”, and the Step-Thru which carries riders 4’8” to 6’1″. Depending on your size, you might be able to ride either version. Many electric bikes don’t cater to short or extra-tall riders, so this really makes the RadCity 5 Plus stand out.

Being 5’1” myself, the step-thru is a perfect fit. The seat adjusts easily to the right height and the swept-back, adjustable handlebars help me sit comfortably upright. The standard Rad Power Bike seat is wider than most and the slim battery stays out of the rider’s way when pedaling.

The RadCity 5 Plus E-Bike is ergonomically designed for comfort and can fit most any rider.

Pros of the RadCity 5 Plus:

  1. Overall, the ergonomic frame makes for a comfortable ride free of annoying little pains. Like any new bike saddle, you might need time to adjust for maximum comfort.
  2. Further, Rad Power Bikes added a front suspension to the RadCity 5 Plus e-bike to dampen the effects of hard bumps and potholes on your daily commute or weekend ride, which it does pretty well. If you’re going to be taking long rides, I’d still suggest getting a good suspension seatpost like the one that I use. I’ve linked to it below the video (https://alnk.to/5udJmH6 ).
  3. Now, thankfully, Rad designed their 750W Geared hub motor to climb hills with ease. I alternately used the throttle and pedal assist to propel me up steep hills and was able to reach the maximum speed without a problem. Further, the tall 27.5” X 2” tires give an advantage on the road, making it fast and agile.
  4. Combine this with a battery offering up to 672 Watt hours and you can ride any street long distance. In fact, you’ll get up to 50+ miles per battery charge, so you’ll have the opportunity to explore even more on any given day.
  5. I love Rad Power Bikes fit guide. Just measure your inseam and use the slider to tell you which ebike, the high-step or step-thru will fit you the best (screenshot in folder).
  6. I also like its easy-to-stop hydraulic brakes and cool, full-coverage fenders with a splash guard!
  7. And although I wasn’t sure about the unique Microshift gearshift at first, I quickly became a believer. Truthfully, you’ll hardly need to press it to shift each gear, which makes it easy and fast. In fact, the first time I shifted, I jumped three gears in one push, having been used to pressing with more force.

Fortunately, I corrected my force immediately and continued to shift gears smoothly!

The “Microshift” gears are sensitive and smooth.

Additional Benefits of the RadCity E-Bike:

Capable and smooth Shimano 7-speed derailleur: I’ve never heard or felt the chain while riding, which is something to appreciate.

Carry up to 275 pounds: This includes whatever weight is added to the built-in rear rack, which by itself holds over 59 lbs. So, I could use my shopping basket with lots of heavy cans and groceries without worry.

The built-in rear bike rack holds up to 59 lbs!

Backlit LCD: This shows the battery charge, speed, distance traveled, pedal assist level… and even a clock, which I haven’t seen before.

And, finally, one of the pros that help Rad Power Bikes remain a top electric bike brand…

Focus on safety:
Rad Power bikes are built to meet U.S safety guidelines as well as the even stricter criteria of the European Committee for Standardization. Plus, Rad completes a 50-point inspection, reflective striping on the tires, and all-weather braking. All of this helps me feel as safe as possible while riding.

Further, The RadCity 5 Plus boasts an LED Headlight and a taillight with a brake light. Even better, the headlight comes on automatically when turning on the bike’s power. This was totally unique to me and an excellent way to help you stay safe while riding.

RadCity 5 Plus Headlight
The RadCity 5 Plus Headlight improves riding safety.

Cons of the RadCity 5 Plus:

  1. The half-twist throttle might not be for you. Although I prefer a twist throttle when riding, some riders might be more content with a thumb throttle which is less likely to be accidentally activated.
  2. Additionally, yes, it has suspension. But if you’re hoping to avoid EVERY bump, you may be slightly disappointed since it only has 50mm of travel. The RadCity isn’t designed for off-roading but the suspension does help on uneven roads or city street bumps.
Half-twist throttle
The Half-twist throttle isn’t for everyone… but I prefer it over a thumb throttle.

What Else to Know Before Buying The RadCity E-Bike

The RadCity 5 Plus weighs 65 lb, which is pretty standard for a commuter and weekended electric bike-e. Naturally, however, I’d love to see it upgraded to one under 60 lbs.

The assembly was pretty standard. However, I did have some difficulty attaching the stem. Although this was probably a user error (mine that is), just make sure you push the stem all the way down onto the steerer tube before continuing your assembly.

Also, the tires have a custom tread designed to be more efficient on pavement, so there’s no question that the RadCity is perfect for commuting on paved roads.

Is the Rad City 5 Plus the Best Electric Bike for You?

The RadCity 5 Plus electric bike is right for you if you’re a daily commuter, enjoy city riding, love to relax with a fast ride on the weekends, or take a chill ride after working all day. Be sure to check out Rad’s commuter riding kits that can be bundled with your purchase to help you get the best e-bike set-up.

This e-bike is not for you if you want to spend time off-roading or riding dirt trails long-distance.

As you can tell by the overwhelmingly positive customer reviews, you’re bound to enjoy this 5th version of Rad Power Bikes urban commuter bike, even if you only ride occasionally.

I hope you’ve learned a lot in my RadCity 5 Plus e-bike review and enjoy your ride!

Guide to Electric Bikes for Kids: Safety First

0

Bikes are a great way to get kids outside and active, as well as provide a ton of fun. The problem is, with so many electric bikes on the market today that are too fast and dangerous for young riders, how do you decide which one is right for your child? And what safety features are important?

There’s a lot to know about electric bikes, leaving parents with many questions during the buying process.

Before buying an electric bike for a kid, a parent or guardian should ask a lot of questions. First, you should know if your child is allowed to ride one where you live, the average cost of a good quality e-bike, how to choose the best e-bike, and whether an e-bike is safe for your child.

In this guide, I’ll help you explore everything you need to know to make the best decisions on buying an electric bike for a kid. I’ll also go over safety considerations and age requirements as well as highlight some of the best models for teens on the market today!

Watch this video to learn about e-bike safety before choosing to let your children ride one!

Are E-Bikes Good for Kids?

In general, riding an electric bike could make sense for teens. There are multiple benefits, even though safety is a significant concern.

The benefits for kids riding e-bikes include:

  • The ability to keep up with bigger and stronger cyclists
  • Staying healthy and fit
  • Reducing stress
  • Improving mood and self-esteem
  • Decreasing indoor screen time

Keeping Up with Others

It can be frustrating for everyone when a child is unable to keep up with other riders. Older children may resent having to wait for their younger siblings to catch up, while parents might wish that they could get more exercise during their time off from work.

Even if older family members don’t have an electric bike, allowing younger riders to have one will help everyone get greater enjoyment out of riding. Further, kids will feel stronger and more capable since they’re able to keep up with everyone (this means less whining!).

Staying Healthy and Fit

Additionally, kids of all ages are more easily encouraged to get outside in the fresh air (and away from the computer or other electronics) when they know they’ll have fun. And, since riding an electric bike makes every hill surmountable and gives them more assistance when they get tired, it won’t feel like exercise!

Since riding an electric bike is fun and easy, kids become more physically active, thus increasing their stamina and building muscle all while keeping their weight regulated.

Stress-Reducing

Although just about any form of exercise can help reduce stress, riding an electric bike also offers fresh air and greater independence. Children and teens often get overwhelmed with schoolwork and feel pressured to achieve. Riding an electric bike may help decrease stress and improve academic achievement.

Further, there may be other stressors in a child’s family or with friends that threaten their well-being. So, having fun riding an electric bicycle is a great way to decrease stress and increase overall happiness.

Improving Mood and Self-Esteem

According to research from the Journal of Pediatric Psychology, exercise can reduce depression and even improve a child’s self-esteem. And it’s possible that exercise itself increases self-esteem, which then helps decrease depression.

Thus, getting exercise on an e-bike offers many ways for a child to become healthier both mentally and physically.

Decreasing Screen Time

Finally, riding an ebike will reduce the amount of time your child spends watching TV or playing electronic games. In general, it’s known that watching too much TV has negative effects on a child’s health.

What Age Does My Child Have to Be to Ride an Electric Bike?

This is an excellent question because your child may not be legally allowed to ride an e-bike where you live!

On average, a child needs to be a minimum of 14 years of age to ride an electric bike. However, laws regarding riding age may differ in each state or country and may depend on e-bike classification. Some places have no age restrictions while others don’t allow anyone under 16 to ride an e-bike.

Always check the laws in your local area before letting a kid ride an e-bike.

The truth is that the laws surrounding e-bikes are confusing and complex, including laws on age restrictions and licensing. And in the United States, each state determines the rules, which makes things even more confusing (this may be, at least partially, why not a lot of manufacturers make e-bikes for kids).

But, I’m going to help clarify the restrictions so that you can make sure your child can legally ride where you live.

Are you sure that your child can ride an electric bike? Find out before buying them an e-bike!

To begin, there don’t seem to be any age restrictions in the EU (which is good news if you live there or plan on traveling there and riding an e-bike with your family). However, right next door, the UK requires kids to be age 14 or older to ride an e-bike legally.

In Canada, electric bikes can be ridden at a minimum age of 12 in Alberta and 16 in Ontario and British Columbia.

Clearly, each country has its own age laws (that may change), so be sure to check them out if you live there or if you plan on riding while visiting.

Taking a closer look at all of the individual states in the US, here’s a chart from Wikipedia indicating state laws surrounding e-bikes in general, as well as age. In regards to your kids’ safety and to follow regulations, you’ll want to look at “Max Speed”, “Max Power”, “Minimum age”, and “Driver’s License”.

Keep in mind that laws can change at any time! The good news, however, is that e-biking laws have been changing consistently for the better, giving us all more freedom to ride. For example, more and more states in the US are starting to classify e-bikes as bicycles and not motorized vehicles! This will help e-bikes become more accessible to children. In fact, now that California is using a 3-tier class system, kids are able to ride e-bikes if it’s a Class 1 or 2.

If you didn’t find the age information you need for your area, and to confirm the current age limits, check with your local government. Nothing will be more frustrating than buying an e-bike for your kid who isn’t allowed to ride it!

Electric Bike Safety Tips for kids and families

Safety Considerations for Kids Riding E-Bikes

Before buying an e-bike for a child or teen, however, parents should understand the risk factors and added concerns of riding an electric bike. To stay safe, kids should learn how to properly ride an electric bike, restrict their speed, follow road safety rules, and wear a bike helmet and other protective gear.

It’s important to use good judgment. No matter what the age limits for legally riding an electric bike are where you live (see the chart in this article below), your first concern should be whether your kid is able to handle the added responsibility of a bike with electric power. If your child is impulsive or thrill-seeking, you’ll want a bike with a low-wattage motor (250W). Or, you simply might wait a couple of years until your kid is older and more responsible.

Pre-teens and teens have been involved in deadly accidents when riding at high speeds, irresponsibly, or not wearing a helmet.

If your child refuses to wear a helmet, then riding an electric bike is not safe for them.

Once you decide to buy an e-bike for your kid, make sure they have plenty of space and time to learn to ride it safely before letting them ride near other people and traffic. And, certainly, encourage them to ride their e-bike on the sidewalk wherever possible.

Help them learn basic bicycle road rules as well as how to respect and ride around pedestrians, without making them annoyed or angry. Teach them to slow down when approaching a person or pet, and how to use their bell while saying “excuse me” and “thank you.” And make sure they understand that wearing a helmet goes along with riding an e-bike.

Finally, parents, it’ll probably fall on you to keep their electric bike in safe running condition. So, don’t forget to tighten the nuts and bolts on it regularly and get it tuned up every 500 miles or so. Good maintenance will also save you money in the long run!

Electric Bike Prices

In general, electric bikes for kids cost between $300 to $2000, depending on quality and features. You’ll find many bikes that fall at the lower end of the price range when shopping for less powerful ones. However, e-bikes made just for kids are limited in quantity and most other options have a price over $1000.

Ultimately, the price you pay will depend upon the brand, the quality of components, and the features included in each model.

For example, you can get a kid’s Swagtron E-B6 Bandit with 250W motor and 20″ wheels for $1195. But a Pedego Trail Tracker with a 500W motor, throttle, and 20″ wheels will cost over twice as much at $2495. With the Pedego, you’re paying more for the higher-powered motor and added throttle, as well as for the higher-end brand.

Should I Buy the Cheapest E-Bike for My Kid?

When buying an electric bike for any age, you’ll get better quality parts with a higher-quality, more expensive model. The difference when purchasing for a kid, however, is that they may soon outgrow their e-bikes. So, it makes sense to buy a cheaper e-bike, especially if they won’t fit on it for more than 1-3 years.

Thus it’s a good idea to take into account that you may need to buy a second electric bicycle within a few years, and choose one accordingly.

That being said, you’ll also want to take these questions into consideration:

  • How fast and how far do you want your kids to ride?
  • How often will they ride?
  • What are the maintenance costs for a kids electric bike?
  • Do you expect to be spending more on accessories?

How Fast and How Far They Will Ride

As a parent myself, I’m guessing that limiting your child’s speed will make you more comfortable with buying an e-bike. So, you need to take into account the maximum speed that can be attained on any model.

The e-bikes designed specifically for kids are likely to have lower-powered 250W motors as opposed to 750W motors. Riding a 750W motor myself, I can tell you that it is fast! And although the motor cuts out at 20mph, you can get the bike up to 28mph with strong pedaling or coasting downhill. That’s way too fast for a young child (and even many adults)!

Next, decide how far you want your child to be able to ride. In other words, how far can the e-bike’s battery go on a single charge? If your 8-year-old is only going to be riding with you on your 8-mile daily rides, then you don’t need a battery that has a range of 45 miles. A bigger battery with a longer range will cost more but may be important for a teen who wants to ride longer distances.

How Often Your Kid Will Ride

Occasional weekend rides might make buying a less expensive bike (with cheaper parts) a good idea. However, if your child will be riding regularly, perhaps commuting to school each day, then buying a cheaper e-bike will mean more repairs and maintenance costs. In this case, paying more for one that uses better quality parts that won’t break as often and has a better warranty makes sense. You might also consider a folding bike for a student who needs to store the bike at school/

Maintenance Costs

Whether you buy a cheap e-bike model or not, you should consider how much you’ll end up spending on maintenance, as this will factor into your total cost.

Most electric bikes need tune-ups every 500 miles or so (but sooner on a cheap electric bike). This cost can range from $75-&150. So, depending on how far you ride in 6 months, a tune-up could be needed every 4 months, 6 months, or just once a year.

Further, a brake adjustment can cost an additional $20-$40, while a new tire can cost around $30.

Check out our step-by-step maintenance guide!

Spending Money on Accessories

Finally, a cheaper e-bike will be less likely to have the accessories you want. You might decide to add a rear-view mirror, water bottle holder, bike bell, rear cargo rack, upgraded bike seat, etc.

It’s best to decide which add-ons you’ll want before making a purchase so that you can total the cost. It could be that buying a more expensive e-bike will provide some of these features at a lower cost.

How to Choose the Right E-Bike for Your Kids

Kids, like many adults, are drawn to the cool features of electric bikes. The only problem is that not all e-bikes are made for kids! The tips in this section will help you choose the right e-bike for your child before you make an impulsive purchase. Naturally, you’ll want to find a bike at an affordable price, but there are other important considerations as well.

Here’s what you should consider to help you choose the perfect pedal assist bike:

  • Find out what features are important to you, like color or battery life (chart of features)
  • Get a bike that is the right size for your child.
  • Look at reviews of different bikes before buying one
  • Whether your child enjoys riding a regular bike
  • If you want your child to take longer rides

What should I look out for when buying an e-bike for my child?

Important Features Checklist:

Review this checklist to decide what features you’re looking for:

Desired FeaturesYesNo
250W/500W Motor
750W Motor
Battery range (run time) of 20+ miles
Max speed of 12-15mph
Max speed of 20mph
Weight of e-bike under 55 lbs
Hybrid (rides on and off dirt/gravel)
Color of the e-bike (does it matter?)
Upgraded, plush seat
Fenders (protect from flying debris)
Foldable (saves space; can take on a train or bus)
LCD Display
Throttle (not recommended for young kids)
7-speed gears
Warranty over 1 year
Check “yes” or “no” to get a list of features that you can search for when buying an e-bike for your child

You will also want to consider the bike type (such as e-mountain bikes, fat tire bikes, or hybrids), getting one with a lower seat height and/or lower center, fat tires vs standard tires, LED lights in the display, and important basic accessories like a rearview mirror.

Which e-bike is best for my child’s age and height?

This is one of the most important considerations when it comes to kids’ electric bikes. If it doesn’t fit properly, then your child won’t be comfortable on it!

Therefore, your first consideration is fit.

Take a look at this general age guide for the best fit that considers your child’s height. However, if your child is taller or shorter than average for their age, you might need to adjust for size.

Bike Frame Size

Average HeightE-Bike’s Frame Size
45.5″-50.5″20″
50.5″-54.5″24″
54.5″-59″24-26″
61.7″ +26″
A family riding bikes together with small children in child seats that attach to bike

You may also want to consider the handlebar height and the seat height if your young child’s legs or arms haven’t caught up with their body.

Electric bicycle speed and power

Next, take a look at power and speed. A teenager 14 years up might be able to responsibly handle a more powerful e-bike, such as one with 500W or 750W. But, most younger kids will get more than enough power with a 250W model.

250W motors are typically limited to going 15-20mph, but some manufacturers limit the speed to far less for kids’ e-bikes, so this is a good thing to look out for. The purpose is to get your child moving and to keep up with the family, not to race (unless you’re looking at electric dirt bikes perhaps).

Personally, I wouldn’t recommend anything more than 250W for kids under 12… and wouldn’t even buy my own teenagers anything over 500W.

How to use reviews when buying

I always recommend reading the reviews of every kid’s electric bike you are considering. You’ll learn a lot of information if you read carefully.

Here’s my advice on reading reviews:

  • Ignore reviews that are hostile (they may be coming from hostile people and don’t accurately represent the product)
  • Read specifically to weed out the factors that are most important. For example, if you have a child who’s 4’9″ and are concerned about getting a good fit, look for other reviewers talking about how it fits their similar-size child.
  • Only look at e-bike reviews if they have 3-stars and up (and preferably 4+ stars)
  • Make certain the reviewer is actually talking about the product you’re interested in
  • If you see a common problem re-occurring in the reviews for the same e-bike model, decide if you could live with that problem… because there’s a good chance you might have to.
  • Don’t buy an e-bike without reviews! Leave that to impulsive buyers and wait until that model has a good number of reviews.

Where to Buy Kid’s E-Bikes Online

Generally speaking, you can find e-bikes for kids in a few places online including Amazon and various individual brands. However, you may also choose to look through the hundreds of models built for adults to find the perfect fit for your child.

Therefore, buying an e-bike for your child can be a little frustrating. Further, many “electric” bikes you’ll see for kids are actually dirt bikes for off-roading rather than bikes for riding on neighborhood streets and bike paths.

Most importantly, don’t assume that because a model has smaller tires it’ll be good for your kid. Many e-bikes have smaller tires so that they can fold up easily… but they may weigh way too much for a smaller child and the frame itself may be too big.

You can buy one on Amazon, but read the fine print and reviews carefully to determine whether it’ll work for your son or daughter. The other option is to buy from an online brand directly. Then you can get questions about the e-bike answered before making a purchase.

To make the buying process easier, I’ve already done the research for you.

Listed in the next section, you’ll find a variety of e-bikes from online brands as well as Amazon.

What Are the Best Electric Bikes for Kids?

The best electric bike brands focus on safety and let parents know the risks of allowing a child to ride one.

The truth about finding the best electric bikes for kids is that models aren’t typically designed just for kids.

However, there are a number of smaller e-bike models that may fit kids who are over 4’10”. Since most of these bikes are geared towards adults, make sure you keep all of the other tips in mind discussed in this article, especially its hub motor power.

Best E-Bike for Ages 14 and Up

Pedego Element

Bright red Pedego Element E-Bike with fat tires

One of the best-priced e-bikes from the high-quality Pedego brand at $1695, the Element comes in 6 different colors to please any kid! It’ll fit kids 4’11” and up, which likely means that kids 14 and older, as well as younger kids who are taller than average.

With 20″ wheels and 4″ fat tires, it’ll take your pre-teen or teen electric bike rider anywhere they want to go, including on the road and on trails. Plus, it’ll go up to 40 miles with its 48 Volt battery and easily tackle hills with its 500W motor. So, it’s a pretty powerful e-bike for the price.

This model even comes with a twist throttle and 5 levels of pedal assist so your kid can ride easy or ride hard! However, the motor will still max out at 20 mph. at 50 lbs of weight, it may be a little heavy if your younger teen needs to lift it.

Pedego Latch

Another good option, the Pedego Latch is an electric folding bike. A foldable bike can come in pretty handy for throwing the back of the car or traveling. However, it’s quite a bit more expensive than the Element, ranging from $2795-$3095.

But it does come in three cool colors… back, lime green, and “space” blue. This is a comfortable choice for parents to buy a child because it only has a 250W motor. But that’s still plenty of power for most youth to get where they want to go.

Other bonuses include a twist throttle, 5 levels of pedal assist, built-in safety lights, and even a USB charger! Like the Element, it has a top speed of 20mph, which should easily satisfy any teen. And it weighs slightly less at around just 46 lbs.

Further, even though it’s foldable, it’s still plenty of bike with 20″ wheels that can fit a variety of sized people. Just fold it up in a few seconds, clip it together, and pop it in the car (or it even attaches to a rear bike rack).

Jetson Bolt Pro Folding E-Bike

Jetson Bolt Electric Bike Review

If you’d rather just get a starter e-bike with a slow speed for your child, without all the fanfare and expense, this may be for you. A cool little folding bike with only 12″ wheels, this may be just what your kid needs to get around. It’s fairly simple, with a 250W motor, a short-range battery of 15 miles. You can get the Bolt with only a throttle (no pedals) or the Jetson Bolt Pro with pedal assist and throttle, giving your child all the power they’ll need.

Getting up to 15.5 mph, it has an adjustable seat height and can carry up to 250 lbs. It can be easily folded and taken wherever it needs to go with the built-in carrying handle. The Jetson e-bike isn’t designed just for kids but it’ll work for kids ages 12-16+ who just want to ride it to school and around town. Another plus… The reviews mention kids riding who are as short as 4’9″.

And the best thing about this mini folding e-bike? It’s around $494 on Amazon! So, although it can work as a starter e-bike, its parts are cheap, so read the reviews to decide if this is for you!

Taking Small Kids on Your Ride

Since we don’t want to leave small children, toddlers, and infants at home, parents can put a kid’s seat on their own e-bike. Check out this cool option:

This is a whopper of a bike (and that’s reflected in its $4295 price tag). But, if you want to take two kids on the back of it, you can have up to 400 lbs. So, kids under 6 can easily ride along with you.

With this e-bike, the entire family can take a ride with up to two kids! Click the link above for more details.

Fat Tire Ebike Review: The Massive Haoqi Orange Leopard Pro

0

Craving a big ebike that traverses all-terrain, rides fast, and travels far on a single battery charge?

To say that the Haoqi Orange Leopard Pro is BIG is an understatement… in fact, it’s massive! Thus, my husband Marc was the lucky one who got to ride it during our fat tire ebike review.

Not only will I tell you what he had to say, but I’ll also share the pros and cons of this cool-looking ebike. In addition, I’ll go over sizing and mention a special fact about the affordable Orange Leopard Pro.

Subscribe to E-Biking Today’s YouTube channel for electric bike reviews and detailed information on living the e-bike life!

Haoqi Leopard Pro E-Bike Review

The first thing you should know about the Leopard Pro is that it retails at $1699, which is around $200-$300 less than the average full-size, fat tire e-bike. Plus, as of this review, it’s selling for even less. Listen to the pros coming up and I think you’ll agree that this electric bike offers fantastic value for the money.

Pros

Check out the many benefits of riding the Leopard Pro.

Ride the Leopard fat tire ebike on rough terrain or on the street.
  1. With a 750Watt geared hub motor, a 48Volt 20 amp hour battery, and 90 Newton Meters of torque, the Haoqi Orange Leopard Pro has the power needed to go pretty much anywhere you want.
  2. Yes, you can ride up to 80 miles on a single charge, which is around two times as far as comparable fat tire ebikes. I’m not sure why Haoqi doesn’t specifically call this a long-range ebike as they do for the Haoqi Eagle, but it clearly competes as one.
  3. Further, Marc liked that his ride on the Leopard felt solid and sturdy, without any tire slippage on dirt and loose gravel.
  4. But here’s the feature that Marc enjoyed the most…The Leopard Pro is fast! It really takes off and appeals to riders who enjoy a bit of a thrill-ride. Plus, with speeds of up to 28mph, you’re given the opportunity to maintain that speed!
  5. This brings us to something cool about the display. You can toggle through the odometer, trip mileage, current mileage, and more right on the front screen. So, you won’t have to mess much trying to find the stats you want to see. And, of course, you can see the battery level, watts, and current pedal assist level.
  6. Plus, being a tech lover, Marc really appreciates the USB charging port on the side of the battery.
  7. Now, even given its lower price, it still has the features I expect in a good fat tire ebike. These include hydraulic disc brakes, an adjustable front suspension, a 7-speed Shimano Tourney gear shift, and knobby 4-inch fat tires.
  8. Marc also loved the overall comfort of the bike with its suspension seat and adjustable handlebars, which allowed him to sit in a fully upright riding position. You can adjust the angle as well as extend the stem to get the most comfortable fit.
  9. And then, Haoqi offers a nice surprise for an ebike at its price… full fenders and a rear rack. You’ll want those fenders when riding through dirt, sand, or snow to keep debris from flying into your face or important electrical components!

And the rear rack comes in handy especially since the Leopard’s payload capacity is a hefty 400 lbs. Please remember that this includes both your body weight and the gear.
  10. In addition to a 2-year warranty, free shipping, and 15-day returns, Haoqi offers an unusual 3 years of battery replacement for free. This benefit offers a great deal of value to the Leopard’s already lower-than-average price.

Before looking at the disadvantages of the Haoqi Leopard Pro, as well as the size and fit of this ebike, please take a second and subscribe to E-Biking Today on YouTube. You’ll get a ton of other helpful reviews and information on electric biking and you’ll have my deepest appreciation.

Cons

Now, here are some issues to look out for on the Haoqi Orange Leopard Pro.

E-Bike Display on Leopard Pro electric bike
The display is pretty nice and easy to read without direct sun.
  1. First, although it has a twist throttle, it isn’t “on-demand”. This means that the throttle speed is tied directly to each pedal assist level. Thus, you go faster with each speed level. Further, it won’t work from a complete stop without being on pedal assist level one or higher. This may be something to get used to if you’ve previously had an on-demand throttle.
  2. Although Marc and I like the unique look of the display, we found it hard to see outdoors unless you have the headlight turned on.
  3. But, most definitely, the biggest problem is that it won’t fit everyone who wants to ride it, like me. The truth is, Haoqi states that it fits riders 5’5 and up. Marc, who is 5’8 fit comfortably but still felt the top bar was a bit close, encouraging him to carefully slide off the seat.

Therefore, fitting well on the Leopard might be a stretch for those under 5’7”. However, remember that your fit has more to do with your inseam measurement than your overall height. If you have long legs, you might find this electric bike to be a perfect fit.

Make sure to determine whether you will fit comfortably before choosing the best electric fat bike for you.

What You Need to Know Before Buying the Haoqi Leopard Pro

I’d like to suggest who this electric fat bike is best for. But first, let me make clear what you are getting if you decide to purchase the Haoqi Orange Leopard Pro

This is a massive, fast, powerful electric bike with fat tires to take you over rugged terrain and paved streets alike. It weighs a somewhat typical 72 lbs, which, although still heavy, is actually less than some other similar fat ebikes I’ve reviewed.

Additionally, I’d give the assembly an average rating, meaning that it wasn’t harder or easier than what is typical. Thankfully, it came with the tools necessary to assemble the e-bike yourself.

Finally, here’s a special fact about the orange Leopard Pro… it also comes in black. So, if you don’t care for the highly visible bright orange color, you can get it in a traditional black as well.

Haoqi Leopard Pro Electric Bike comes in bright orange or traditional black.

Is Leopard Pro Fat Tire Bike for You?

The Leopard Pro may be the best electric bike for you if you want a fast, long-range, value-focused electric fat bike at a totally affordable price… and if you’re tall enough to ride it!

However, it may not be for you if you’re concerned about taking off too fast, have no desire to go faster than 20mph, or need an on-demand throttle.

Further, if you’re on the shorter end of the suggested height range or are concerned about being able to manage a large ebike, then you might wish to check out an electric fat bike with smaller 20-inch tires, like the Antelope Pro.

It’s always a good idea to learn more about Haoqi electric bikes and the Orange Leopard Pro before making a purchase decision.

Ride1Up Rift Electric Fat Bike Review (The Ultimate Adventure)

0

Looking for a rugged yet refined fat tire electric bike? The Ride1Up Rift could be the e-bike to take you on the adventures you’ve been looking for.

The Rift electric bike offers 4-inch fat tires, a powerful 750W motor, a large front suspension, a long range of up to 60 miles, and a maximum speed of 28mph. It’s an adventure e-bike full of value and sells for a fair price.

In this review, I’ll give you a closer look at the Ride1Up Rift electric fat bike, which has been gaining attention in the e-bike community for its robust and refined design. I’ll cover its key features, benefits, and drawbacks, so you can make an informed decision before investing in this adventure-ready e-bike.

Plus, I’ll tell you about one feature that makes it shine above the other electric fat bike brands.

And, although the disadvantages of this fat tire adventure ebike appear to be few, there are a couple of potential cons you should know about before taking the plunge. These will be discussed as well.

First Impressions

At first glance, the Ride1Up Rift electric fat bike appears to be a capable off-road e-bike that can handle any adventure thrown its way. The oversized tires give it a muscular appearance, while the front suspension and sleek frame add a touch of finesse.

But despite its rugged exterior, the Rift is still stylish and refined, with a beautiful matte finish and an integrated, removable battery. It’s just as comfortable riding on the road as off-road.

Check out the Ride1Up Rift specifications!

The Rift
The Rift has a sleek design, even for a powerful off-road fat bike.

Key Features and Benefits

  1. Competitive Pricing

One of the biggest advantages of the Rift is its price. At $1895, it’s comparable to other full-size fat tire electric bikes and offers excellent value for the money.

  1. High-Speed Capabilities

The Rift is a Class 2 e-bike that can be unlocked to Class 3, providing pedal-assisted speeds of up to 28mph. You can easily unlock the top speed using the customizable color LCD display.

It also comes equipped with a thumb throttle, allowing you to reach speeds of up to 20mph effortlessly. I appreciate getting a quick burst of speed to cross streets or move in and out of traffic.

  1. Long Battery Range

Here’s what I believe to be one of the biggest pros of this adventure e-bike… the increase in range over other similar electric fat bikes.

Ride1Up claims the Rift can travel 45-60 miles on a single charge, depending on various factors such as terrain, rider weight, and assistance levels. The bike comes with a 20 Amp hour removable battery, providing enough power to keep you going for extended periods.

Removing the battery from the Rift.
Removing the battery from the Rift.
  1. Powerful Motor

The Rift electric bike is powered by a 750W motor with 95 Newton Meters of torque, which provides sufficient power to tackle rugged terrain with ease. Plus, riding up steep hills is quick and easy!
  2. Superior Braking System

This cool adventure e-bike also features quad-piston hydraulic brakes, which provide superior stopping power on and off-road.

Slipping on off-road terrain is a huge fear of mine. But, I’m happy to report that the Rift’s brakes proved their advantage over mechanical disc brakes, even on dirt and loose gravel, adding an extra layer of safety and control, and giving peace of mind.
  3. Comfortable and Ergonomic Design

The Rift’s reinforced frame and riding posture prioritize rider comfort, with a natural sitting position, ergonomic grips, and a comfortable saddle. Additionally, Ride1Up offers the bike in both a step-over or step-thru frame, allowing for easy on and off access.
  4. Front Suspension

The Rift’s front suspension boasts an impressive 120mm of travel, offering excellent shock absorption and a smoother ride on rough terrain. This added comfort and control can make a significant difference in the overall riding experience, particularly when tackling off-road trails or uneven urban environments.
  5. Additional Features and Benefits

Other advantages of the fat tire Rift e-bike are the quality Kenda Krusade anti-puncture tires, full-coverage fenders, and Shimano 8-speed gears, all of which give you a little bit more for your money.

Potential Drawbacks

  1. Heavy Weight

At 84.5 lbs, the Rift is quite a heavy electric bike, making it harder to keep upright if the bike falls or if the rider loses balance.

  1. Thumb Throttle

While the thumb throttle is convenient, some riders may prefer a twist throttle. I think a twist throttle is more natural to use since your hand is already right next to the throttle. The thumb throttle can be difficult to reach and apply the right amount of power when climbing steep hills.

This is more of a personal preference, however.

  1. Small LCD Display

The 2.2-inch color LCD display can be a bit difficult to read, particularly in bright sunlight or low light conditions.

Value of the Rift Electric Fat Bike

Besides all of the aforementioned advantages of the Rift, there are several other features that add to its $1899 value.

For one, I really appreciate the bright headlight AND integrated taillight. Other ebike brands save money by leaving off the rear light, which is a huge mistake when it comes to your riding safety.

And the Rift has a super solid, reinforced frame, helping it stand out as a beast of an e-bike!

Of course, it’s fantastic that Ride1Up always offers its e-bikes in a step-over or step-thru frame, so most everyone can fit on one. Personally, I love the Rift step-thru for the ease of getting on and off. This is especially helpful on a heavy fat bike.

Plus, in true Ride1Up style, the frame and riding posture is focused on making your ride as comfortable as possible. So, the saddle and ergonomic grips help you settle in, while the sitting posture is natural.

Ride1Up Rift
Part of the Ride1Up Rift Value includes a comfortable saddle and grips, as well as an integrated rear rack!

Passenger Seat Option

Additionally, I really like that Ride1Up stepped out of the norm to add a passenger seat option to their electric fat bike. Although I wouldn’t recommend doing any heavy-duty off-road riding with a passenger on the back, the option is great for cruising with a partner down your favorite bike trails.

The tough integrated rack can hold up to 150 lbs. Be aware that the passenger seat is sold separately.

Ride1Up Rift Suspension

Out of all of the Rift’s benefits, here’s how the Rift tops other brands with fat tire adventure e-bikes… it offers a front suspension with 120mm of travel, whereas competitors’ full-size fat bikes currently offer as little as 60mm of travel.

Rift View of Front Suspension
View of the Rift’s front suspension!

Thus, the Rift offers great shock absorption and a smoother ride on rough terrain, making it easier to handle obstacles like rocks, roots, and uneven surfaces. This added comfort and control can improve the overall riding experience, particularly when tackling off-road trails or uneven urban environments.

Additionally, the extra suspension travel allows for better traction on various surfaces, as the front wheel maintains contact with the ground more consistently. This increased stability and grip can enhance the electric bike’s performance and safety, making it more enjoyable and reliable for riders looking to explore diverse landscapes.

What You Need to Know Before You Buy

You might also like to know that the Rift comes in 3 color choices: Forest Green, Artic White, and Graphite Gray.

It also has a substantial payload capacity of 350 lbs. But keep in mind that this total weight capacity includes the rider, passenger, and gear.

Finally, it fits riders from around 5 feet to 6’4”. In fact, I have the seat raised about 3.5 inches and I’m only 5’1″, so I think Ride1Up overshot the size here and that you may be able to fit on the step-thru even if you’re under 5’1”.

What Type of Rider Is the Rift the Best E-Bike For?

The Rift is the best electric bike for anyone who loves adventuring and wants to do it in style. It’s ideal for people who want to ride off-road, explore trails, or even just commute to work on the wild side. If that sounds like you, the Ride1Up Rift could be a great choice for you!

Bandit X-Trail Lite Electric Moped Review: Redefine Off-Road Adventures

0

Imagine effortlessly gliding through rugged landscapes, conquering every bump and obstacle in your path, all while enjoying a fast and smooth ride without working hard. Or perhaps, you’re more the kind of person who wants to put in the effort and reap the physical rewards?

Those are the kind of options that the Bandit X-Trail Lite gives you. With an all-terrain full suspension, twist throttle, and 6 levels of pedal assist, your ride could be taken to a whole new level.

But before you decide to buy, continue reading my X-Trail Lite electric moped review to make sure it’s the right electric bike for you. Check out the list of pros and cons, as well as the cool new technology that Bandit Bikes is adding to all of its electric mopeds and bikes.

Electric Moped Review

First, let’s answer this question: Is the X-Trail Lite really a moped or is it an electric bike?

Although the Bandit X-Trail Lite is designed as a cutting-edge electric moped, it passes as a Class 3 electric bike with pedal assist speeds maxing out at 28mph. So, you can ride it as a moped without pedaling (using throttle only) or enjoy it as an e-bike that you pedal.

This means NO registration, NO license, and NO insurance required because it meets the criteria of an electric bike.

So, consider this an electric bike review as much as an electric moped review!

Pros of the X-Trail Lite

Powerful and fast: The X-Trail Lite is powered by a 750W rear hub motor and a 696 Watt-hour battery, making it capable of going far and fast. Even Level 1 of the 6 levels of pedal assist gives a good kick start, allowing riders to accelerate quickly. This was particularly helpful for me riding through intersections and going up steep hills.

Full suspension: The 80mm front suspension and the rear shock absorb the impact of hard bumps, providing riders with a smooth ride. This feature is especially useful for off-road riding and it really helped me to feel in control of the bike.

Although a rear suspension can make it harder to get up to speed by pedaling, the 6 levels of pedal assist make up for it. You can choose whether to put in the effort or not.

Long-range: With a 70+ mile range, the X-Trail Lite is classified as a long-range electric bike. Although laying off the throttle is necessary to achieve the full range, Bandit Bikes claims that it has a throttle-only range of 50 miles, making it a true electric moped that doesn’t require pedaling.

Comfortable: The X-Trail Lite is designed with full suspension, 4-inch knobby fat tires, a step-thru frame, ergonomic grips, and a comfortable saddle, providing riders with a smooth and comfortable ride. It’s suitable for both off-road and on-road rides.

All-Terrain: The 4-inch knobby, puncture-resistant fat tires give good traction for off-road riding. Additionally, I think that the fat tires and full suspension combination are what give this electric bike a smooth ride.

Although The X-Trail Lite is great for off-roading, it also rides smoothly on the pavement while the full suspension makes it comfortable for long rides.

A note on tire pressure: the tires state a max pressure of 30 PSI. I started riding at 15 PSI and even lowered it to around 10-12 PSI going off-road. You’ll need to consider what pressure works best for you depending on your weight and riding terrain.

Full Suspension Electric Bike
The X-Trail Lite Electric Bike has full Suspension, all-terrain fat tires, and a step-through frame!

Step-Through Frame: Acknowledging the size and weight of this electric bike, the step-thru frame is another huge benefit. Although designed as an electric moped-style e-bike, Bandit was able to accommodate more riders by making it easy to step through. In general, most electric mopeds and fat tire ebikes are just too big for a small rider

At 5’1″, I ride with my seat raised only about 1”. But depending on your inseam, someone as short as 4’11” may be able to ride. Plus, it still accommodates riders up to 6’4″.

Great stopping power: Thankfully, this heavy electric moped has 180mm front and rear hydraulic disc brakes to ensure that it stops fast and completely. I wouldn’t expect anything less!

Good visibility: Another benefit is the waterproof LED headlight/taillight combo. When you’re on a long ride and get caught in the dark as the sun goes down, you’re still visible to cars and can see the path in front of you. Plus, the rear light also acts as a brake light, which was useful to let my riding partner know that I was slowing down.

Smart LCD: It’s colorful and easy to read so you can change the controls while riding (I discuss more tech advances further on).

Affordable: Retailing at $1699, the X-Trail Lite is a steal for a fat tire, full-suspension electric moped/electric bike all-in-one. Additionally, you can get an additional $100 discount using the special E-Biking Today code.

Additional Pros: Besides being able to choose from three colors, other pros include a USB port, 7-speed Shimano Tourney gears, ergonomic grips, and a wide saddle that’s a mix of comfort bike and moped-style.

Plus, not only do the high fenders give the e-bike a unique look, but I appreciate that they don’t rub on the tires like so many other e-bikes (and thus they don’t require constant adjustment).

X-Trail Lite in Black
The X-Trail Lite comes in Black, White, and one other color!

Cons of the X-Trail Lite

Fast acceleration: The X-Trail Lite may take off a little too fast for some, which may not be suitable for beginner riders.

Heavy: Weighing in at 77 pounds (35kg), the X-Trail Lite is pretty heavy. However, this is comparable to the weight of other typical fat tire electric bikes.

I think the improvement in ride quality makes up for this if you’ll be riding on rough terrain or if you have a bad back or other physical ailments.

Short rear rack: The wooden plank rear rack adds a fun touch to the X-Trail Lite’s design, but it’s too short to hold a big bag or pannier.

Wide saddle nose: Although the saddle is wide and comfortable overall, its nose is also pretty wide. Thus, it may not be comfortable for long-distance pedaling, especially for smaller riders (my 5’8″ test rider was completely comfortable pedaling).

Woman standing next to Bandit Electric Moped X-Trail Lite
The wide saddle is very comfortable but its wide nose may make it difficult to pedal long-distance for small riders.

Bandit X-Trail Lite’s Advanced Technology Features

  5. Hydraulic Disc Brakes: 180mm hydraulic brakes provide more stopping power on wet and dry roads. This is ultra important when carrying a heavy load of cargo.
  6. Added Safety Features: Blix really didn’t leave out anything important on the Packa Genie. With puncture-resistant tires, integrated front and rear lights, Shimano 7-speed shifter, throttle, fenders, and an integrated smart bell, it’s built to provide optimum enjoyment and safety.
  7. Easy to Use: The Blix Packa Genie is designed to be user-friendly, with a simple control panel that allows you to easily adjust your speed and monitor your battery life. Additionally, the bike features a low-step frame that makes it easy to get on and off, even when carrying cargo.
  8. Stylish Design: With its sleek, modern design and attention to detail, the Blix Packa Genie is sure to turn heads wherever you go. Plus, with some cool color options available (I love the Teal), you can customize the e-bike to match your personal style.
  9. Socially Responsible: I appreciate that Blix promotes a more sustainable future by producing electric bikes as an alternative to cars. By choosing to ride a Blix bike, you’re not only helping to reduce your carbon footprint, but you are also supporting a socially responsible brand.
The Blix Packa Genie with Dual Battery
The Blix Packa Genie can get up to 80 miles of range on one charge using dual batteries.

Cons of the Packa Genie

  1. Heavy Weight: The Blix Packa Genie is a relatively heavy e-bike, weighing 67 pounds with a single battery and up to 75.5 pounds with dual batteries. This could make it more difficult to lift or maneuver, especially when fully loaded with cargo.
  2. Expensive: With a starting price of $2,099, the Packa Genie is an investment. While the e-bike’s features and capabilities make it worth the price for many riders, it may be out of reach for those on a tight budget.
  3. Limited Availability: Blix is a relatively small company, and as a result, their electric bikes may not be as widely available to test ride as some other brands, depending on your location.

Blix Cargo E-Bike Wrap-Up

For me, the benefits of the Packa Genie electric cargo bike far outweigh the few drawbacks. With its powerful motor, spacious cargo area, and versatile design, this e-bike has the potential to become your go-to for everything from grocery shopping to family outings.

Further, as someone who cares about social awareness and sustainability, I appreciate that Blix has taken steps to reduce their carbon footprint and promote eco-friendliness.

Overall, the Blix Packa Genie is an impressive cargo e-bike with a lot of great features and benefits. This makes it definitely worth considering for anyone in the market for an electric cargo bike. With its powerful motor, long battery life, and versatile cargo capacity, the Blix Packa Genie is perfect for anyone with lots of cargo looking to replace their car with a more sustainable ride!

How Do I Choose an Electric Cargo Bike? (Power or Utility)

0
Man with package riding cargo e-bike

E-bikes are gradually transforming into credible car alternatives. For instance, despite being smaller and a lot less powerful than cars, cargo e-bikes can carry a number of items from groceries to deliveries and even your kids if large (and comfortable) enough. So how do you decide which electric cargo bike is right for you?

When choosing an electric cargo bike, you should consider factors such as power (and stability), comfort, accessories, and type of e-bike. You should also choose a cargo e-bike based on the amount and kind of cargo you’ll be carrying.

In this article, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know to choose the best cargo e-bike for you. Plus, I’ll show you electric cargo e-bike options that may fit your needs.

Blix Packa Genie Dual Battery Electric Bike in Teal
Blix Packa Genie Dual Battery Electric Bike holds up to 200 lbs of cargo!

Understanding Power and Stability

Each e-bike has a specifications sheet provided by the manufacturer that details the e-bike’s motor wattage, battery size, and torque. You need to know these three specifications to have a clearer picture of the electric bike’s power and how you can put your e-cargo bike to use.

Keep in mind that some e-cargo bikes are longer and heavier than other e-bikes, especially if they’re built for including child seats or other heavy cargo. Thus, power and stability are important considerations.

Watts

Watts are a unit of measurement for your electric bicycle’s motor power. Though wattage always pops up when discussing e-bike power, it’s crucial to note that it refers to how much energy the motor consumes and not how much it outputs.

Different motors have different effectiveness, meaning a higher watts rating alone may not mean more power given off. In general, a cargo e-bike should have a minimum wattage of 500W if you plan to carry a heavy load.

Battery Size

E-bikes’ battery capacity is measured in watt-hours. If your cargo e-bike has a higher watt-hour rating (Volts X Amp Hours), it will likely have a longer riding range. It would be best not to focus on range ratings only, as they usually give an outlook under ideal conditions. But you do want to make sure any electric bike you buy can manage to go as far as you’ll need it to.

Also, look for an e-bike with batteries that are UL certified, as they are manufactured using industry-level safety standards.

Torque

Torque is simply the work that the motor can do or the amount of force that can cause the electric bicycle to move. It is measured in Newton-meters (Nm), with a higher torque rating implying that your cargo e-bike can accelerate faster from a low speed or a dead stop.

If you intend to carry heavy cargo, such as children or a big dog in a carrier, then you should opt for an e-bike with a higher torque rating.

Software Management

Additionally, your e-bike has software that manages your battery usage and motor power output. It may use support modes such as sport, turbo, eco, and touring that improve your riding experience. Therefore, you should choose a cargo e-bike that breaks down this information clearly if you want to know how fast you’ve ridden or how many miles you’ve gone.

Consider Comfort Level

The electric assist that e-bikes have is a sweet spot. Because different bikes have different assist modes, you need to get one with the right power levels that suit your unique needs.

For instance, sport and turbo modes would be more suitable if you’re carrying heavy loads. Using eco-mode will help you save that extra juice if you spend the better part of the day running several errands. I would recommend settling on a cargo e-bike with different modes if you have multiple use cases.

A good way to guarantee comfort on your cargo e-bike is to choose one with a good seat.

Look for e-bikes with seats that have extra padding, are waterproof, and have ventilation. These features work to increase your overall comfort. Most cargo bikes have seats that are extra-wide to distribute your weight evenly.

Therefore, you should get a cargo e-bicycle with a comfortable seat to make the ride more enjoyable, especially if you spend a better part of your day on your e-bike.

Types of Cargo E-Bikes

Electric cargo bikes come in four main types, Long Tail, Mid Tail, Long John, and Long John Tricycle. Each type has its advantages for specific uses:

  • Longtail: As the name suggests, longtail cargo bikes have a longer than usual back to host additional racks, kids’ seats, and storage space. This modification explains why long tails usually have smaller wheels. A longtail cargo bike is, therefore, a great option for carrying heavy loads as it won’t interfere with your range of motion.
Examples: Rad Power Bikes RadWagon or Blix Packa Genie
  • Midtail: Midtail bikes look similar to traditional ones (although slightly longer) and can easily navigate urban areas. Their compact size makes them easier to stow and carry than other utility bikes. The trade-off is that you cannot carry heavy cargo or more than one child on a mid-tail.
Examples: Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser or RadRunner
  • Long John: Also called cargo box bikes or bakfiets, Long Johns are bigger than longtail cargo e-bikes, with a large storage area at the front. The storage location lowers the center of gravity, increasing the e-bike’s stability. It is also easy to load and unload cargo from this electric bike, making it a great option for transporting heavy merchandise.
Examples: Bunch Bikes Family Cargo E-Bikes
  • Long John Tricycle: The Long John Tricycle or cargo tricycles have a third wheel that distinguishes them from the rest. While some have the cargo area at the front, others have it at the back. Having an e-trike with a third wheel also increases the electric bike’s overall stability, and you won’t have to use your feet when making a stop. Some may even let you carry up to three kids!

Cargo E-Bike Accessories

Consider what gear you’ll need on your utility e-bike. Many already come with racks or give you an option to purchase them. But, additional accessories can help you make the most out of riding with a cargo load, or even help transport kids and pets! Accessories also improve your riding experience and that of your passenger, if you have one.

Bottle Cage

A bottle cage is an often overlooked- but helpful- accessory for carrying water bottles. It comes in handy if you have prolonged riding hours and need to hydrate.

While a hydration pack can also get the job done, purchasing a bottle cage (from Amazon) is advisable as it is simpler to use and easier to clean. Plus, there’s no reason to wear a backpack when you have a bike that holds cargo!

E-Bike Trailer

A bike trailer provides additional storage space and can support baskets and storage cases. Or it can accommodate one or two children depending upon the size (or even your pets). Thanks to owning an e-cargo bike, you won’t have any trouble pulling a trailer behind you, even with the added weight. You can always increase pedal assistance or use the throttle to power up.

By purchasing a cargo e-bike with a trailer, you’ll be well-placed to ferry heavy cargo or your family as you enjoy the ride. Or you can add a trailer for your e-bike from Amazon.

Extra Battery Pack

An extra battery pack doubles the range your electric bicycle can give. It can come in handy when riding for long hours, especially when making deliveries. Therefore, if you’re the type that likes to run multiple errands on your cargo e-bike, it is highly advisable to invest in an extra battery pack or add a second battery to your e-bike.

Doing so gives you the peace of mind that your pedal assist won’t bail out on you when you need it the most.

E-Bike Repair Kit

A cargo e-bike repair kit (get it on Amazon) can come in handy if your e-bike develops issues, which is a normal part of the e-biking lifestyle.

Your repair kit should have accessories like a pump, chain lube, replacement chain links, a tire lever, tire patches, and a multitool. Investing in a repair kit will ensure you don’t get stranded on your electric bike when running your errands.

Types of E-Bike Motors

The kind of motor your electric cargo bicycle has will greatly determine your overall riding experience, as explained below:

E-Bike Motor Classes

Though electric bikes in the United States are governed using state laws, federal laws limit low-speed electric bicycle motors to only 750 watts. E-Bike motors in the U.S. (and many other countries) are classified into three categories.

  • Class 1: The motor will help you pedal until you reach 20 miles per hour (32.18 km per hour). It then stops assisting in accelerating when it reaches this speed.
  • Class 2: In this class, your motor will assist in accelerating either when you are pedaling or throttling. It will turn off when your e-bike reaches 20 miles per hour (32.18 km per hour).
  • Class 3: Like class 1, a motor in this class only works when it is pedal-assisted. However, the motor will stop working when you reach a higher cut-off speed of 28 miles per hour (45.06 km per hour).

Motor-Assist (also referred to as Pedal Assist)

Motor-assist systems help in improving your e-bike riding experience. Though their basic function is largely the same, there are generally two motor-assist systems for e-bikes.

  • Mid-drive assist: These systems have the motor hooked at the bottom of the e-bike’s frame. Power is then applied to the wheels through the drivetrain, giving an assist that feels more natural.
  • Hub motors: Electric bike hub motors are directly connected to the rear wheel and do not have a drivetrain. It can make fixing a flat a bit more complicated as you have to remove the hub first. Most electric cargo bikes have hub motors.

Electric Bicycle Brands

We all want to buy products without worrying about their quality or durability. Reputable brands will always give you the peace of mind that you’re investing in a good cargo e-bike that will serve you for ages.

Investing in a good quality product means you won’t have your cargo e-bike breaking down every now and then. It will save you a lot in maintenance costs in the long term, compared to buying a substandard product that will need constant repairs.

When you buy your cargo e-bike from a reputable brand, you will get support in the rare case that you have trouble operating it. The brand should offer support by giving troubleshooting material online, a hotline, or service personnel at various outlets near you.

Reputable brands will also have warranties on their products, so you won’t have to worry about getting a replacement if yours becomes faulty. They will also have genuine spare parts if you need to have your cargo e-bike repaired.

Load Capacity and Storage Space

As we have seen, different types of electric bicycles have various carrying capacities, which is more important when you’re talking about a cargo bike. While many e-bike users will want to carry as much load as possible, the amount of carrying capacity per cargo e-bike will vary.

If you need to carry more cargo during your errands, an e-bike with more storage options, and a higher payload capacity, will suit you. Even if your cargo e-bike doesn’t come with additional seats, storage baskets, and racks when you buy it, you should consider whether you’ll need these additional accessories and how much they’ll weigh.

Generally, electric cargo bikes have a total load capacity they can carry. You can find this weight limit from individual brands and models. And they can be quite different. For example, the longtail cargo e-bike, Rad Power Bikes RadWagon, carries a total payload capacity of 350 lb (158 kg), making it capable of carrying up to two children.

Keep in mind that the bike payload isn’t the same as the rear rack capacity, which, in this case, is 120 lb (54 kg). So, although the cargo bike itself can handle 350 lb of weight, a rear or front rack’s weight limit is much less. So, you’ll need to plan accordingly when adding your cargo (especially if you are carrying kids).

Alternatively, the mid-tail Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser cargo e-bike (seen below) has a smaller cargo capacity of 300 lb (136 kg). However, it still easily accommodates one child passenger. It has bigger wheels than the RadWagon but weighs almost 12 lbs less.

Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser
Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser mid-tail cargo bike

A Long John will particularly come in handy for delivery services that may require carrying extra heavy loads. On the other hand, you can get a mid-tail cargo bike if you don’t fancy ferrying lots of cargo. All in all, your choice of cargo e-bike will depend on how you intend to use it.

Advantages of Cargo E-Bikes

Environmentally Friendly

E-cargo bikes only require a full electric charge and do not use fossil fuels or emit CO2. Therefore, adopting e-bikes will reduce overall dependence on cars and consequently reduce carbon emissions.

By investing in a cargo electric bicycle, you’ll be playing a direct role in conserving the environment by reducing your overall CO2 footprint.

Family Friendly

Some cargo e-bikes come with compartments to carry your kids, so you can interact with them as you attend to your day-to-day tasks. This gives you the extra time to bond with your little one(s) as you enjoy a trip across the town to your destination.

It’s also a great way to shop for groceries or run errands with your family.

Good Alternative to Cars

With the extra storage and family friendliness, cargo bikes can replace your car for light errands that don’t require too much distance covered.

Electric bikes also get through traffic faster compared to cars. Therefore, if you plan on getting around in an urban area, then using your cargo e-bike is a good car alternative.

Flexible and Convenient

Apart from being easy to navigate through traffic, cargo e-bikes are much easier to maintain than motorcycles and cars. You also won’t have to struggle to find parking space for your e-bike like you would when shopping or running errands with your vehicle.

Therefore, you might want to consider a cargo e-bike if you’re after flexibility and convenience, especially on weekends.

Pocket Friendly

It will cost you much less to charge your electric bicycle than to buy fuel for your car or motorcycle. Your e-bike batteries will also last longer if well maintained.

Therefore, while an electric bicycle might seem expensive at first, you’ll save more in the long run as they’re usually easy to maintain and a lot more affordable than cars.

How To Maintain Your Cargo E-Bike

Getting a utility e-bike is one thing, but making sure it serves you well for long enough is another.

Here are some tips for maintaining cargo e-bikes:

Clean It Regularly

Even the best electric cargo bikes tend to get dirtier during wet and cold seasons. Allowing dirt to pile up on your e-bike not only makes it an eyesore but can also damage some components.

Therefore, you should regularly clean your e-bike to avoid unwanted repair costs. Try your best to clean your cargo e-bike after every muddy trip to keep it in pristine condition.

Avoid Draining the Battery

As a rule of thumb, you shouldn’t drain your battery as doing so will shorten its range, eventually reducing its life.

Additionally, since your motor is the heart of your e-bike, you should ensure that it is always working well. Make sure that the wiring from your batteries to your motor is okay. You can also check to see if the drivetrain is working well.

Wrapping Up

Although e-bikes continue to gain traction, cargo e-bikes offer the added advantage of more storage and carrying space.

When choosing the best electric cargo bikes, it’s crucial to consider factors such as battery life, capacity, power output, comfort, added accessories, and the bike design that will fit your needs the best.

You should also check on the kind of motor it uses, storage accessibility, and brand to ensure it serves your needs for a long time.

Revv 1

Ride1Up has always been known for its stylish commuter e-bikes. But, now that they’ve added a stylish “moto-inspired” bike to their line-up, the game has truly changed.

Not only does this cool-looking fat tire e-bike have 4″ fat tires, but it also offers an option of full suspension. So, while it can glide along the street, it performs on rugged terrain as well.

It has a range of up to 60 miles, a powerful 750W motor, and a twist throttle, but still has a comfortable upright seat position. Plus, if a maximum speed of 20mph doesn’t satisfy you, you can unlock the speed to 28+mph with the off-road mode!

And, if that weren’t enough, hydraulic brakes, 100mm suspension, and hardened alloy fenders will take your ride to the next level! If you’re a thrill-seeker, then this is the best Ride1Up electric bike for you.

Although you’re likely to find your perfect e-bike within their nice selection of high-quality, value-oriented e-bikes, there are some other top brands you may wish to take a look at first.

Rad Power Bikes

Rad Power Bikes is one of the largest brands in North America, with several different style of e-bikes to look at. The main difference between this brand and Ride1Up is that they offer fat tire e-bikes, off-road bikes, and a folding electric bike. Being that Ride1Up is located in the Southwest, an area in the USA full of sunny days and great weather, it’s no surprise that they design efficient e-bikes built for use as daily transportation or recreation. But there are some other special things about this US-based brand as well.

What’s Unique About Ride1Up E-Bikes?

In addition to their super clean look integrated batteries, and mechanical or hydraulic disc brakes, every Ride1Up bike is a Class 3 e-bike, as opposed to a Class 1 or 2. This means that you can ride motor-assisted for a top speed of 28 mph, instead of a top speed of only 20 mph. Therefore, their electric bikes go faster than many other popular e-bike brands out there! That’s just one more way they provide the best electric bikes for transportation.

Plus, on most models, you can choose from a step-over or step-thru frame in two different colors. The step-through frame is the smaller of the two.

Another great thing about Ride1Up electric bikes is that they have lightweight options, including the Roadster v2, weighing only 32 lb, and the Ride1Up Core 5 at only 49 lb. Many electric bikes weigh up to 70 lbs or more!

Check each model to see if you’ll need to purchase any other handy accessories like a rear rack.

And, thanks to the affordable prices, sleek design with integrated batteries, and practical urban style of these e-bikes, they’re easy and fun for daily commuting, running errands, and enjoying a weekend ride, all with a powerful motor to get you up steep hills and through city streets.

How Much Assembly is Needed?

Fortunately, 85% of each electric bicycle is already assembled. The front fork and handlebars will need installation and tightening of bolts and screws, as will the crank, seat post, pedals, and front wheel.

You will either need to have the rest of the e-bike professionally assembled (which Ride1Up recommends), or have it looked over by a bike mechanic before you ride, to make certain it is correctly and safely assembled.

Be aware that any damage done during assembly may void the warranty. Fortunately, you can view their assembly videos to assist you.

Warranty and Returns

Ride1Up has a 1-year warranty for manufacturing defects for the original owner.

As warned above, the warranty won’t cover damage due to incorrect assembly, which is a typical electric bike warranty regardless of the brand. This includes failure to install, adjust, or tighten components properly.

The warranty may also be void if you make certain modifications or repairs to the e-bike. This won’t be an issue for most people who just want to get a great e-bike and ride it!

It’s always a good idea to read the entire warranty agreement if you have any concerns.

Along with every pedal assist e-bike purchase comes a 100% money-back guarantee. Specifically, you get a 30-day trial period in case you decide to return your e-bike. There are a few requirements that must be met to qualify for this benefit.

Ride1Up Parts & Accessories

Thankfully, Ride1Up has its own online parts and accessories shop where you can find battery chargers, digital controller displays, replacement keys, passenger kits, and more.

You can even get a cool-looking pannier bag to carry bike tools and supplies. You can get the all-important bike tool kit from Amazon.

Conclusion

Ride1Up electric bikes are easy to find and buy with the click of a button, even without leaving your home. And they’re worth it, both in cost, utility, and value!

Make sure to check out the various models and read customer reviews to find the best e-bike for you since all of them are high-quality, reasonably priced, and have a top speed of 28 mph using pedal assist (Class 3). And don’t forget to check for special Ride1Up offers.
