Rad Power Bike vs Lectric XP
Rad Power Bikes vs Lectric XP: Brands Compared

Rad Power Bikes and Lectric XP bike brands both have great e-bikes, but they have some key differences you should consider when deciding which electric bike to buy. Rad Power Bikes has more options to choose from than Lectric, but Lectric may just have exactly what you need.

In general, Rad Power Bikes are best if you want an e-bike made for a specific purpose, like transporting cargo or children, city riding, or off-road riding. But the Lectric XP is easy to fold and transport and goes faster than any of the Rad bikes.

But, there are several other comparisons to consider.

In this article, I’ll detail the different types of electric bikes and unique versions offered by these exclusively electric bike companies and compare their specifications. I’ll also look at the warranty and return options for these e-bikes and highlight some additional reviews weighing the pros and cons to help you choose one that’s right for you.

And don’t miss the essential comparison of the Lectric XP and the RadExpand, the most similar brand models!

Watch to learn about the powerful Radster Road and Radster Trail bikes!
  • RadCity: There are two options for the RadCity bike, a step-thru that comes in charcoal and white and a standard step that comes in charcoal. You can get the standard frame or step-thru in the regular or Plus version. As the name suggests, this is an electric bike made for commuting and city riding.
  • RadExpand: The RadExpand comes in a step-thru version in either black or white. It’s made to easily transport since it’s a folding e-bike. Take note, the small size doesn’t mean the bike performs any less than the other Rad e-bikes – it has seven speeds and adjusts for smaller riders between 4’10″ and 5’10″ (147 cm and 178 cm).
  • RadRover Plus: The RadRover has two versions, a step-thru in two colors and a standard in charcoal. This fat tire electric bike is easy for anyone to assemble. The brakes are easy to control, and the battery is removable.
  • RadRunner Plus: This e-bike combines a utility, cargo, and commuter bike with a comfortable seat and two color options. You can opt to put a seat in place of the rear cargo space to take a passenger along.
  • RadWagon: The RadWagon comes in three colors and is an electric cargo bike at its finest. The rear rack lets you carry up to one hundred and twenty pounds (120 lb) of cargo with you wherever you go. With the add-on child seats, you can take up to two kids with you.

Since Rad Power Bikes has so many e-bikes to choose from, you may need help choosing which one to get. This article offers a comparison of the Rad Bikes brand models and details the reasons one of their electric bikes may be right for you.

Lectric E-Bikes

This electric bike company specializes in primarily one model with multiple variations, all based on the popular and original Lectric XP 2.0 ebike. The XP 3.0 is their newest upgrade of the XP

Watch the video to check out the Lectric XP 3.0:

The Lectric XP offers many variations of its most popular model the XP:

Black Lectric XP 3.0 with passenger package

They are all folding electric bikes, so they are easy to fold and transport anywhere you need to go.

Since its XP, Lectric has designed many electric bikes for different riders. These include dual-battery cargo e-bikes, commuter bikes, off-road e-bikes, and even an electric trike. Take a look at the many Lectric options and variations.

If you want a foldable Lectric Step-Thru e-bike, there are a few decisions to make:

  1. Which version: The XP 3.0 is generally the best value for the price and features
  2. What frame style (step-thru or regular): Step-Thru is easier to get on and off
  3. What color: black or white; or choose from 4 different colors on the Lectric Lite.

The Lectric e-bikes have a lot of speed and offer a smooth ride, thanks to the five pedal assist levels. No matter what type of weather or conditions you are riding in, the mechanical disc brakes on the Lectric e-bikes will help you brake quickly.

Rad Power Bikes vs. Lectric Bikes (Power and Features Compared)

The specifications of the Rad Power e-bikes and the Lectric Bikes also differ slightly. This section compares the battery types, ride times per charge, motor wattages, and weight capacity.

Battery and Range Comparison

First, let us look at the battery capacity and ride times per charge for each electric bike brand overall.

Rad Power Bikes offers ranges for these specifications since they offer multiple bikes. The ride times per charge range from 25 to 50 miles (40 to 80 km) or more per battery charge. The RadRover 6 Plus is on the lower end, offering at least 25 miles (40 km) per charge. The RadCity has a long range of fifty or more miles per charge. The other e-bike models have a range of 45 miles (72 km) or more per charge.

The removable battery typically takes between four and six hours to charge.

The Lectric XP 3.0 gives you approximately forty-five miles (72 km) or more per charge. However, if you choose the long-range XP, you’ll get up to 65 miles (105 km). The battery is not removable, but there is an external charging port, so there is no need to remove the battery when you want to power up your e-bike.

Motor Wattage

The electric motor on Rad Power Bikes typically has a 750-watt motor, with the exception of the RadMission, which has a 500W motor.

Lectric e-bikes have a 500W motor, no matter which version you choose, which is more than satisfactory for riding on level ground and most hills. You’ll get a high-quality bike motor with either brand.

Weight Capacity (Payload)

The XP 3.0 has a 330 lb (150 kg) payload capacity. While other versions have a maximum weight capacity for their bike racks of seventy-five pounds, the XP 3.0 has a fully reinforced rack with a capacity of 150 lbs (68 kg). Thus it can carry another rider or a child seat.

This is significantly more than the similar RadExpand can carry with a rear rack weight capacity of only 55 lb (25 kg).

All of the electric bikes for the Rad brand have a maximum load capacity of 275 lbs (124 kg) except for the RadWagon, which has a maximum capacity of 350 lbs (158 kg).

Returns and Warranties

Now that we understand how the electric bicycles themselves compare, I can compare each company’s return and warranty policies. These are important if you’re unsure of which e-bike you’ll purchase and think you may want to exchange or return it.

Rad Power Bikes has a fourteen-day return policy which starts from the day your electric bike is delivered. But, there are a few conditions that the bike must meet if you want a refund. You can’t have more than ten miles logged on the odometer, and there can’t be any signs of use, like dirt and scratches.

Compared to the Rad Power Bikes return policy, Lectric e-bikes are more strict. You can cancel your Lectric XP order for a full refund until it ships, minus the shipping fee. However, once you get the shipping information, or once you receive your Lectric XP, the sale is final, and no refunds or exchanges will be permitted.

The one and only exception to Lectric’s refund policy is for damaged or defective e-bikes. Even then, you must return the bike in the original packaging and have proof of purchase.

As for warranties, both brands offer a one-year warranty on their electric bicycles. The warranty starts from the purchase date, covering material and manufacturer defects. The warranties are only valid for the original owner, and it’s imperative to have a receipt proving you were the one who purchased the e-bike in order to get the replacement.

So, no matter if you choose a Rad Power Bike or a Lectric XP e-bike, you don’t have to worry about differences in warranties.

RadExpand vs Lectric XP

As the newest folding e-bike in Rad Bike’s lineup, the RadExpand is the closest model to compare to the Lectric XP. I’ve pulled together this table to give a side-by-side comparison of the two electric bikes:

Bike ModelRadExpandLectric XP
Motor750W takes you up to 20 mph500W-800W takes you up to 28 mph (see XP Lite for exceptions)
RangeUp to 45 milesUp to 40-100 miles (depending on model)

Special FeaturesStep-Thru; adjustable handlebarsStep-Thru options; Class 1,2, or 3 ability (depending on model)
Cost$1899$799-$1199

All-in-all, the main difference between the two e-bikes is speed and price. For example, the Lectric XP 3.0 has a 500W (1000W peak) planetary geared hub motor that only cuts out once you reach 28 mph (as opposed to 20 mph) and is a few hundred dollars cheaper.

However, the RadExpand has greater adjustability and 1.0″ wider fat tires (4.0″ total), giving it an advantage on rough terrain. Further, Rad Power Bikes is one of the best electric bike brands and has a range of different types of e-bikes to consider.

Reviews of Rad Power Bikes vs the Lectric XP

This last section has some video reviews for comparison. These reviews go over the good and the bad of the two brands of e-bikes, which will help you decide which type of e-bike is better for you.

First, in this YouTube video, CNET reviews the Lectric XP 2.0, and they highlight the best features of the e-bike and a review of how it was riding for a week. They also go over the purchasing process and the assembly.

Now, we have a review of the RadExpand by Rad Power Bikes. It’s the Rad e-bike model most similar to the Lectric XP 3.0 and 2.0, so you can see how they differ. But you should still consider the other types of Rad Power Bikes if you want something specific like a 4.0″ fat tire e-bike, a city e-bike, or an electric cargo bicycle.

Final Thoughts

Both Rad Power Bikes and Lectric e-bike brands are great e-bikes in the middle price range. But they have certain differences, which is why you would choose one over the other depending on what you want in an electric bike.

The Lectric XP is most comparable to the RadExpand, but there are a few differences you should check out in the table above.

If you want a variety of e-bikes to choose from, or you know you want a powerful cargo e-bike, you should go with a Rad bike like the RadWagon or RadRunner. Still, the Lectric XP is a versatile folding e-bike that you can take anywhere and goes fast… and it’s the clear winner if your budget is around $1000.

Velotric Discover 2 Review: A Perfect Blend of Comfort and Performance

0

Finding an electric bike that perfectly balances comfort and performance is a challenge. However, the Velotric Discover 2 achieves this blend with impressive specifications and extraordinary features without breaking the bank.

Having tested the Discover 2 in different locations, I’m excited to share how it performs and what’s special about it. I’ll show you everything from what makes it a comfortable ride to a surprising list of technology features and performance upgrades that are a step ahead of similar electric bikes.

Get ready to learn the pros and cons and what you need to know to decide if this is the best electric bike for you. Watch for the details of what Velotric calls their “most comfortable e-bike yet” and how its features and performance make the Discover 2 a best-value e-bike.

I’m Lisa from E-Biking Today and we’re digging into the Velotric Discover 2 Review, starting with…

The Pros of the Discover 2

Powerful Motor and 28 MPH Top Speed

With a 750W/1100W peak motor producing 75 Newton Meters of torque, the Discover 2 electric bike delivered a thrilling ride. The motor’s stellar performance shined when I climbed a long steep incline. Without any extra effort, I reached speeds of 15mph on ECO mode, level 5, while the motor remained surprisingly quiet. Further, acceleration was smooth and responsive, making the Discover 2 ideal for fast urban commutes or leisurely rides at the beach.

Impressive Battery

Velotric Discover 2 UL Listed Battery
Velotric Discover 2 UL 2271 Battery

Equipped with 48 volts, 705.6 watt-hours, and a 3A fast charger, this UL-certified battery offers a long range of up to 75 miles on pedal assist mode. I did NOT have to worry about recharging during my day at the beach. In fact, after 21 miles of testing the assistance modes and throttle, I still had a battery charge of 81%. This range is for real!

Even more exciting is that the Discover 2 battery is IPX7 rated while the bike is IPX6 rated. So, unlike with most ebikes, there’s no worry about getting caught in a downpour or giving it a good washing. In fact, the battery came out fully functional after Velotric tested its waterproof abilities by putting it in the washing machine. Just make sure to fully dry the battery connectors before reinserting the battery into the bike!

Customizable Riding Experience

With a Shimano 8-speed derailleur, and three modes of pedal assist, EACH with five levels of assistance, I quickly tailored a ride to my preferences and fitness needs. I did a little third-grade math and figured out that equals 15 levels of customization!

Here’s how it all works: I noticed a significant power increase when switching from Eco to Trail to Boost modes. While I kept my pedaling effort consistent, the difference in pedal assist levels within each mode was much less noticeable. Follow along on my Velotric display to see the subtle speed differences from levels 1 to 5.

Initially, throttle power was limited to a maximum speed on each level. I quickly switched off the throttle limiter in the display settings to get an on-demand burst of speed. This was super useful when transitioning between different roads and riding conditions.

Comfort and Ergonomic Design

The Velotric Discover 2 provides numerous comfort features. The ergonomic high-density foam saddle and grips, swept-back handlebars, and adjustable stem offered a comfortable and supportive upright riding position. And, I didn’t experience any fatigue or discomfort during a 10-mile ride. So instead of shifting around hoping to get comfortable, I had a pleasant ride.

Comfort Saddle
The Velotric Discover 2 has many upgrades from the Discover 1.

Smooth Suspension

The Velotric Discover 2 features a hydraulic suspension fork with 80mm travel. This suspension system did its job and provided a smooth and comfortable ride, reducing the discomfort of bumps and vibrations. Plus, its lock-out feature allows the bike to go farther and faster on smooth roads and uphill climbs.

Torque Sensor

Another significant feature adding to the comfort of the Discover 2 was the torque sensor. Every take-off was smooth and how hard I pedaled, rather than how fast, determined my exercise level. It was wonderful to have this control and assistance was just a thumb push away.

All of these features gave me confidence that I could comfortably ride long distances.

Safety Features

Shimano Altus Gear Shifter
The Shimano Altus Gear Shifter adds versatility to your ride.

The Velotric Discover 2 stopped quickly and reliably thanks to its 180mm Tektro hydraulic disc brakes. I even stopped on loose sand without slipping.

The braking system’s performance is complemented by the integrated lighting system. This includes a 130Lux high-output LED front light and rear brake lights with turn signals integrated on the rear rack.

I was happy to see that they were bright and visible, unlike the poor-quality lighting used on some ebikes.

Advanced Technology

It’s hard to believe that an e-bike under $2000 offers smart tech. First, the Velotric Discover 2 addresses security issues with its innovative Apple Find My™ integration. This feature lets you track your bike’s location using your smartphone, providing peace of mind if it’s ever stolen. When I stepped off the bike to take a picture, I felt more secure knowing I could locate my bike if someone grabbed it.

Plus, the Discover 2 includes other convenient tech like a USB-C phone charger and a Velotric app that records essential ride data AND synchronizes with Apple Health.

As if this isn’t enough, Velotric added cruise control, letting you maintain a more consistent speed to help you enjoy your ride.

Robust Build and Load Capacity

Rear Rack
The Rear Rack Capacity is 66 lbs and can hold substantial gear.

With a high-quality Novatec thru-axle, this sturdy e-bike has a maximum load capacity of 440 lbs and a rear rack load capacity of 66lbs. Thus, the Velotric Discover 2 is an excellent choice for any rider’s weight. And you can transport groceries or gear.

Color Display and Remote

The display was easy to adjust and read in bright light, providing valuable information about speed, battery life, and more. Velotric sends a handy little guide to help and tells you how to adjust the speed limit on the back!

Additional Safety Features

First, the Discover 2 electric bike is UL-certified 2849, so it’s been tested under the highest standards. And the battery has UL 2271 certification. But it also added a bright 130LUX headlight reaching 150 ft, a visible brake light with turn signals, and 27.5×2.4″ Kenda puncture-resistant tires, suitable for city streets and light off-road terrain.

Ergonomic grip
Comfortable ergonomic grips and swept-back handlebar.

The Cons of the Velotric Discover 2

Sure, using “Apple Find My” is an excellent way to keep track of your bike… if you have an iPhone. But you’ll miss out on this added technology if you don’t.

And I’d like to feel a bigger power difference when increasing the 5 pedal assist levels in each mode, especially on an incline. Getting more assistance with the up and down arrows, instead of switching modes, would be ideal. However, adjusting to Trail or Boost mode did give me the power I needed.

Velotric Discover 2 vs Aventon Level 2 and Pace 500.3

The Discover 2 offers greater power, more torque, and a longer range as compared to its competition, the Aventon Level 2 and Pace 500.3. The Aventon e-bikes only have 500 watts of motor power with 750 watts of peak power while the Discover 2 gives out a full 750 watts of power with 1100 watts of peak power. Along with an additional 15-25 Newton meters of torque, the Discover 2’s power performance significantly exceeds both Aventon e-bikes.

Plus, the Discover 2 new tech features also shine in comparison: A fully waterproof battery, brighter headlight, advanced USB-C charging port, automatic error detection, cruise control, and 15 levels of pedal assist compared to just four on the Aventon bikes.

What You Need to Know Before You Buy

First, the Discover 2 weighs 63 lbs, which is pretty average for a cruiser or commuter e-bike.

In case you didn’t know, the Velotric Discover 2 is a substantial upgrade from the popular Discover 1. Considering the value of the upgrades added to this latest model, its price of $1899 is pretty fair. Now if you want to get as much value as possible, but the price tag is too high, check out the lower-priced Discover 1 Plus.

Velotric Discover 1 Plus

Finally, the Velotric Discover 2 has two frame sizes to fit riders 4’11” to 6’4” so that almost anyone will be comfortable. Plus, it comes in four unique colors.

Who is the Velotric Discover 2 Best for?

Tech-savvy riders who rely on their devices for navigation and communication will find the Discover 2 packed with advanced features they can’t live without.

This ebike is also a top contender for ages 50+ and senior riders who seek a comfortable bike that has everything. With a low 15” step-through frame, getting on and off the Discover 2 is incredibly easy.

And, if you own the Discover 1 and are ready to upgrade to the newest features and tech discussed in this review, then the Discover 2 is the perfect choice.

So, What Are You Getting?

In the Velotric Discover 2 review, you’ve seen how an e-bike can deliver an impressive combination of performance, comfort, affordability, and versatility. The Discover 2’s powerful motor, long battery life, and advanced features make it an excellent choice for many riders.

Whether you’re commuting in the city, exploring new paths, or simply enjoying a leisurely ride, the Discover 2 offers a reliable, high-performance, and enjoyable experience. With few concerns to worry about, the Velotric Discover 2’s value for the price makes it stand out above the competition.

Are Step-Through E-Bikes Unisex?

0
RadMini Step through e-bike on thebeach

Traditional bikes have often been manufactured and sold as bikes with men’s and women’s frames. A man’s bike frame had a horizontal top tube or diamond-shaped frame, while a woman’s had a much lower tube which allowed her to step through the frame. In general, this is no longer the case.

In fact, step-through e-bikes are unisex and can be ridden by both men and women. Electric bikes with step-through frames are accessible to everyone regardless of sex or size. However, they benefit shorter riders, seniors, cargo carriers, and those with physical limitations the most.

Why Should Men Ride a Step-Through E-Bike?

Step-Through e-bikes (also known as low-step) were originally created in the early 20th century to allow women with dresses or skirts to get on and ride a bicycle. Historically, they have also been useful for bike riders who carry commercial goods or cargo with them.

Obviously, women aren’t required to wear dresses while riding bikes anymore and most e-bikers ride for reasons other than running a business off the back of their bike.

But why should a man ride a step-through model as opposed to a traditional step-over e-bike (also known as “high-step”)?

Man standing next to Step Through E-Bike
Step-Through e-bikes are ridden by men and women!

Reasons a Man Should Ride a Step-Through E-Bike:

  1. You’re a well-dressed commuter- A step-through e-bike will allow you to wear more restrictive business attire such as a well-fitting suit or slacks.
  2. You carry supplies or books to work or school- You can pile your rear rack with all essentials without leaving room to swing your leg up over your e-bike.
  3. You have an injury or physical limitation- You’ll have a much easier time getting on and off your e-bike if you have leg, hip, or back pain or other physical limitations… you won’t need to raise your leg up and over the seat or horizontal top tube.
  4. You’re a senior man- Let’s face it, it just gets harder to mount a bike as you age… by purchasing a step-through electric bike now, it’ll remain accessible to you for years to come.

Pros and Cons of Step-Through Electric Bikes for Men and Women

Woman sitting on Rad Power Bikes Radster Road Electric Bike
The Radster Road by Rad Power Bikes!

In general, unisex step-through bikes are practical and functional. And because electric bikes make bike riding easier and more accessible, a step-through frame just makes it even more useful.

And why you should buy an electric bike with a step-through frame has nothing to do with whether you are a man or a woman.

PROS of Step-Through E-BikesCONS of Step-Through E-Bikes
Easy for everyone to get on and offThe frame may be weaker and thus require more reinforcement
Greater clearance standing over an e-bikeMay be slightly heavier due to the added reinforced material
Faster to dismount when neededNo top tube for hanging on a bike rack or for storage
Easier to get on when carrying cargo on the rear of the bikeThe stigma that it’s a “girls” bike
More accessible for a physically disabled personMust hold the handlebar to balance the bike
More accessible for riders with certain injuriesMore difficult to accessorize without a top tube
You can ride one wearing a dress, skirt, or other restrictive clothing
There are a ton of low-step e-bikes to choose from
Woman riding white electric bike
Riding My Lectric XP 3.0 with a step-through frame!

Not surprisingly, the fact that you can get on and off a step-through e-bike easily makes it beneficial for everyone. However, it has several advantages if you fall into one of these categories:

Advantages for a Shorter-than-Average Person

A step-thru frame has several advantages for a short person. Not only is it more comfortable to slide off the bike, without worrying that you’ll get hurt on the top tube, but you can also easily stand over the frame and jump off quickly if necessary. You’re also less likely to get tripped up by the frame because you’ll only need to raise your leg around 17″ on average.

Look for the “stand-over height” in an e-bike’s sizing specifications list to find out how high you’ll need to lift your leg.

Further, low-step frames may even be designed to be slightly smaller, making them a better overall fit if you are smaller than average.

Advantages for Seniors

Senior Man Riding Electric Bike

As you can see, there are more pros than cons when it comes to step-through e-bikes. However, whether one is right for you depends on what advantages or disadvantages are the most important to you.

For seniors, concern over remaining capable of doing daily activities and activities you love grows greater each year. A step-through e-bike allows seniors to ride comfortably year after year. If your hip gets stiff or you pull a muscle in your back, you can still get on your electric bike. And once you’re on it, you can use as much pedal assist or throttle as needed to help you ride.

Being able to continue riding your e-bike into the future is super important since you’ll be making a substantial investment.

Advantages for Those With Physical Limitations

One of the most important reasons that step-through electric bikes are great is that it allows access to bike riding for men or women with disabilities and/or physical limitations.

Once again, it’s easier to get on and off. Plus, disabled persons can bring the necessary equipment with them on a rear rack and won’t have to throw their legs up and over to get on their e-bike.

There are even step-through electric tricycles for those who have difficulty with balance or prefer having three wheels.

Comfort and Accessibility

The Bison Pro’s design prioritizes rider comfort and accessibility. The foldable frame’s low step-through height of 15 inches made it easy to get on and off the trike without any hassle and will be especially helpful for riders with less mobility. The added front suspension smoothed out the bumps and dips so I wasn’t uncomfortable.

Robust Build and Weight Capacity

Constructed from durable aluminum alloy, the Bison Pro’s frame feels sturdy. The trike supports riders up to 300 lbs (or rider + cargo), making it suitable for most. Despite its SUV-like build, it was easy to handle and maneuver, thanks to its well-balanced design.

Fat Tire Design

Fat Tire
4-inch fat tires!

The Emojo Bison Pro Electric Trike features different-sized tires: a 24 x 4.0″ tire at the front and two 20 x 4.0″ tires at the rear. This design choice offers several distinct advantages including greater stability, maneuverability, comfort, and safety. The larger front tire gave me good control and balance, while the smaller rear tires enhanced maneuverability and handling. The three fat tires improved traction on a variety of terrain.

Superior Safety

Safety is paramount for an electric trike, and the Bison Pro excels in this regard with its hydraulic disc brakes on both the front and rear wheels. These brakes offered excellent stopping power and responsiveness, giving me confidence during my ride. I stopped easily and smoothly every time.

Further, this e-trike offers an easy-to-use parking brake with an unexpected benefit. When I set the brake, the power was cut off. So when you accidentally hit the throttle or pedal, the trike won’t take off without you. Just get in the habit of setting the brake. This error on the easy-to-read LCD will remind you to remove the parking brake when ready to ride.

Convenient Features

The Emojo Bison Pro is packed with thoughtful features that enhanced my test ride experience. Comfortable ergonomic grips and a thumb throttle allowed effortless acceleration. The Shimano 7-speed transmission offered additional control when climbing hills and preserved battery life.

Ample storage baskets added a practical touch and were perfect for carrying groceries, personal items, or even your pet (show pet holder on the site). While the front basket was easily accessible, the large rear basket (21 x 17.5 x 7.5 inches) provided ample storage space. I carried home groceries with no problem!

The Bison Pro has a Large Rear Storage Basket + a front basket!

High Performance and Certification

The upgraded high-performance controller ensures smooth and efficient operation, while the trike’s certification to UL2849 standards underscores its safety and reliability. These features and benefits collectively contributed to a high-quality, dependable ride.

Cons of the Bison Pro E-Trike

The Saddle

Rear of Saddle with Backrest
The Saddle with Backrest is adjustable up and down but may still be too big for smaller riders.

I’ll admit, a full saddle with a backrest is desirable on a long ride. However, it seems the backrest leans back a little too far for some riders. Perhaps this design was necessary to fit the front basket when the trike was folded. As you can see, I rode it like any other bike, by sitting up on the saddle. So even though you can move the backrest up or down, it may not be useful for a small rider.

Price

Although the Emojo Bison Pro high-performance e-trike offers lots of value, the $2999 price may be more than you’d like. So you’ll have to decide if the lifestyle flexibility and adventure it offers are worth it.

What To Know Before You Buy

Size & Fit

Woman standing next to the Emojo Bison Pro electric trike
This electric trike fits almost everyone!

I appreciate that the Emojo Bison Pro Etrike can fit everyone from 4’10” to 6’10”. But it’s important to note that Emojo states it fits best for riders 5’4” to 6’10”. So, what does that mean exactly? Being 5’1”, I felt very comfortable on it, with one exception… the backrest. I couldn’t even come close to using the backrest and the nose of the seat was a little wide. Thus, I’d say that the Bison Pro does fit almost everyone. If you’re a small rider, you may decide to switch out the seat. Fortunately, many good, inexpensive saddles with backrests (or comfortable seats) are on Amazon.

Assembly Service

Unassembled, the Bison Pro comes in multiple boxes and lots of pieces. However, I’m happy to tell you that Emojo offers assembly service… and I highly recommend you take my advice. You’ll pay $200 for a professionally assembled 3-wheel e-trike, giving you total peace of mind and reduced stress. And, it’ll ship for free and be delivered ready to ride in as little as 1-2 days, depending on your location.

Accessories

Check to see if Emojo is giving away free accessories with your purchase. Then, other special items go with Emojo’s electric trikes, including a rear child seat passenger bench (Amazon) for adult trikes and a tricycle carrier (hitch rack).

E-Trike Carrier

The Emojo trike hitch rack is designed specifically for electric trikes and can carry all 123 lbs (with battery) of the Bison Pro e-trike. This rack offers an incredible opportunity to take your trike to a beautiful bike path or exciting beach boardwalk. Watch this video for details on assembly, hitch attachment, and loading the e-trike. Plus, find out what tools you need to make assembly easy.

Who Should Ride This Trike

What I love about this e-trike is that almost anyone can ride it! The Bison Pro (on Amazon) is perfect for riders with injuries or disabilities or those who have difficulty riding a two-wheel bicycle.

But it also suits riders who want an easy ride to the store or work. And, yes, it’s a wonderful option for 50+ riders and seniors who want to stay active outdoors but not worry about balance or riding too far from home.

And, finally, the Bison Pro is designed with urban dwellers in mind. Its foldable frame lets you store in tight spaces yet it’s easy to ride through the city to pick up dinner or run errands.

Emojo Bison Pro LCD and Handlebar Features
The Emojo Bison Pro has an easy-to-read LCD, throttle, and 5 levels of pedal assist.

Conclusion

After extensive testing, I can confidently say that the Emojo Bison Pro Electric Trike is a top option for anyone seeking a reliable, powerful, and comfortable e-trike. Its combination of performance, range, and thoughtful design makes it an excellent choice for daily commuting and leisurely rides. Whether you’re new to electric trikes or a seasoned rider, the Bison Pro promises a riding experience that’s both fun and functional. So, hop on this amazing adult trike and… enjoy your ride!

Aventon Aventure 2 Electric Fat Bike Review (with Torque Sensor)

0

Wish you had an electric bike that could go almost anywhere? One that rides over a variety of terrain smoothly but zips around comfortably on paved trails and city streets?

Hi, I’m Lisa from E-Biking Today and I’m excited to share my Aventon Aventure 2 electric fat bike review and ride experience with you.

Let me say that this electric bike has been the most fun ride experience I’ve had yet! Overall, I’m impressed by the 1130W peak motor, long-range, and smooth-riding torque sensor in this $1999 fat tire ebike. Aventon added multiple upgrades to the Aventure 2 but didn’t add to the price.

I’m excited to share all of the details with you! Plus, although I’ve struggled to find any disadvantages of this cool adventure ebike, I found a few. I’ll tell you the pros and cons and why you should buy (or not buy) it in this Aventon Aventure 2 electric bike review.

Aventure 2 Specs, Performance, and Ride Experience

Discover what you need to know about the Aventon Aventure 2 in the table. Take a look at its specifications and my ride experience and review notes.

Performance ComponentsReview Notes & Ride Experience
Motor750W (Sustained), 1130W (Peak) Brushless Hub Motor (48V)Powerful enough for commuting and off-road riding
Battery48V 15Ah Removable Lithium-ion BatteryAbove-average range (720Wh) but the same battery size as the original model; beautiful frame integration
RangeUp to 60 miles (96 km)My range test revealed that I rode 27 miles (43 km) and lost approximately 43% of my battery charge (see the image below); if you use higher pedal assist levels and more throttle, or ride off-road, the real-world range will be much lower… still, the range is more than sufficient for most riders
Top Speed28 mph (45 km/h)The Aventon Aventure ships as a Class 2 ebike with a top speed of 20 mph (32 km/h), but I easily unlocked it to its maximum speed of 28 mph by pushing a couple of buttons to modify the display.

Tires26″ x 4″ Fat TiresProvide a solid, smooth, and comfortable ride; I didn’t experience any slipping on off-road terrain and felt confident I could tackle steep hills (both going up and down)
ThrottleLeft-Side ThumbThe throttle is powerful and will push you to 20 mph (32 km/h)quickly; I noticed that I had to push it all the way down to make it work

Payload Capacity400 lbs (181 kg)You can carry a lot of weight, so it’s a great e-bike for a heavy person as well as a rider carrying a lot of gear.

Pros of the Aventon Aventure 2 (Reasons to Buy)

I’m about to show you everything amazing about the Aventon Aventure 2 in this ebike review. Not only is it a huge tech upgrade over the original Aventure, but it also smashes other electric bike competition (including Rad Power Bikes RadRover Plus) by including a torque sensor!

Torque Sensor

Why is a torque sensor helpful to e-bike riders?

The torque sensor on the Aventon Aventure 2 makes the biggest difference in its overall value. This upgraded setup provides a responsive and intuitive riding experience, one that senses when you begin to pedal.

I noticed that when I pedaled harder, the motor instantly responded by providing more power. So, I was able to quickly and easily accelerate from a stop, climb steep hills, and maintain a consistent speed on uneven terrain.

Another way to look at it is this: a torque sensor measures the amount of force or pressure applied to the pedals by the rider. Thus, I really love that the Aventure 2 starts moving when I pedal and stops moving when I am no longer pedaling. Overall, a torque sensor lets you choose how hard you want to work and lets you do it consistently (in turn, this provides a better opportunity for exercise).

Finally, electric bikes with a torque sensor help conserve battery life and offer a longer range, even more so for off-roaders or commuters who ride at higher speeds.

Aventon Aventure 2 With Torque Sensor
Aventon Aventure 2 has a superior torque sensor as opposed to a cadence sensor!

Torque Sensor vs Cadence Sensor

With a cadence sensor, you can feel a delay between when you start pedaling and when the motor engages.

In fact, there are times when I’ve felt as though an ebike is driving itself and my feet are just along for the ride.

I’ve actually had many near misses with doors and cars riding ebikes with cadence sensors, which simply measure the rotation of the pedals. And there was that one nasty curb that I didn’t miss!

Overall, the torque sensor makes the Aventon Aventure 2 an excellent choice if you want a high-performance e-bike that rides like a natural extension of your own pedal power.

Above-Average Value

There are some other serious advantages of the affordable Aventure 2 electric bike in addition to the torque sensor. These include an 80mm front suspension fork, hydraulic disc brakes, and 8-speed gears. You also get 4-inch all-terrain fat tires.

Aventure Front Suspension Fork
The Aventure Front Suspension Fork made a huge difference in ride quality and enjoyment for me!
Shimano Gears on the Aventure 2
Shimano Gears on the Aventure 2 are high-quality and shifted smoothly!

These features have made my ride experience incredibly comfortable. I’ve gone up and down hills off-road that I wouldn’t dare try on other electric bikes. So, I’ve had a ton of fun riding through canyons and dirt trails, even after it’s been raining.

Plus, the 750Watt motor and 4-level pedal assist can take you up to at least 28mph with a battery range of up to 60 miles. Just choose from the color-coded Eco, Tour, Sport, and Turbo modes. I’ve spent most of my time riding in Eco, Tour, and Sport modes with short throttle bursts. And I’ve only lost roughly 43% of my battery in 27 miles (43 km).

Aventon Aventure 2 Display Eco Mode
Aventon Aventure 2 Smart LCD Display Showing Eco Mode Pedal Assist

I was also surprised at my level of comfort on the new Aventon Aventure 2 ebike. Not only is it a smooth ride on or offroad, but the ergonomic grips, saddle, and overall fit make the ride experience truly enjoyable. But, if you need a wider saddle, it’s easy and inexpensive to replace.

Further, the Aventure 2 ebike holds up to 400 lbs of weight! Thankfully, you can use the on-demand throttle to help you get moving if there is a lot of weight on the bike.

And I can’t forget to mention that Aventon ebikes have included a bunch of features as standard equipment: a strong kickstand, fenders, and a rear rack to tote your gear.

These benefits really add to the amazing value of this electric bike!

Aventure Rear Rack and Fenders
Aventure Rear Rack and Fenders help you go to the store or off-road.

Advanced Tech Features

Another cool advantage of the Aventure 2 is the backlit, smart LCD display that pairs with the iOS or Android Aventon app. Just press and hold the + and – buttons (at the same time) to get the menu.

Then use the arrow keys to move up or down and choose what you want to modify. Using the app, you can record your ride stats and increase the speed limit up to 51km/h (equivalent to 31 mph). There are probably very few rides where you need to go that fast, and I don’t recommend it from a riding safety standpoint.

There’s also an integrated headlight and two (2) rear lights with a special new tech twist… turn signals. So, you have a light on either side of the tire. Simply press the left or right arrow for each turn signal. They’re a little hard to see during the day but are especially useful at dusk, dawn, or night when it’s harder for cars to see cyclists.

Please use caution, however. I don’t think you should rely only on these turn signals since most drivers aren’t looking for them. Instead, you should always look around, use hand signals, and know what’s coming up behind you in your bike’s rearview mirror.

Aventure 2 Size and Fit

Another thing that shoots the Aventure.2 to the top of my best ebikes list is the sizing and fit. You can get a step-over or step-thru model, each with two frame sizes to choose from. Thus, ANYONE can ride, even a shorter person like me.

Sustainable Packaging

Also, Aventon electric bikes provide sustainable packaging for boxing and shipping, using rope ties and eco-friendly, easy-to-remove tape. Plus, the accessories and extra parts (such as the pedals) come in a super sturdy accessory box that you can repurpose!

Cons of the Aventon Aventure 2 (Reasons Not to Buy)

I’ll admit that I’m kind of reaching here for a few cons of the Aventure 2. But you should know everything before you buy. There’s only one thing about the Aventure e-bike that might be a reason not to buy.

Aventon Aventure 2 Battery integrated into the step-through frame
Aventon Aventure 2 Battery contributes to the overall weight of the e-bike. You can remove the battery to make it lighter for transport.

Heavy Electric Fat Bike

The Aventure 2 weighs 77 lbs (35 kg), which is not unusual for a full-size fat tire ebike, but it’s quite heavy just the same. The Aventure 1 weighs 73 lbs (33 kg). So, presumably, a little bit of weight was added to enhance the performance of the Aventure 2.

Likely, if you would have trouble lifting 77 lbs, you’ll still have trouble lifting any heavy e-bike. However, if you have a riding partner to help or don’t see any need to pick up your e-bike, then this won’t be a big concern for you.

Truthfully, if you want an adventure electric fat bike, it’ll be a heavy ebike no matter which one you choose. Further, even a smaller folding e-bike with 20-inch fat tires won’t get you over as much diverse terrain.

So, here are my thoughts. You might as well get the Aventon Aventure 2 since it’s one of the best electric bikes with fat tires and a great torque sensor setup. Compare how much electric bikes weigh in this article.

Aventon App Connection

I’ve found that I have to check my electric bike’s connection with the Aventon app to make sure it’s recording my stats before each ride. If you don’t care about recording your ride statistics, then this isn’t a con for you. And it’s not a big concern in the first place.

Additionally, when adjusting the speed limit, you can only do it in kilometers per hour. Therefore, you’ll have to spend a few seconds looking up the equivalent in miles per hour.

For your information, 51 km/h is equivalent to 31 mph, which is the top speed on the display. I was able to easily get my Aventure 2 up to 28mph (45 km/h). But, I honestly don’t have anywhere I feel is safe to test it at a greater speed.

Missing a Simple Feature

Here is one of the most unfortunate things I discovered during my Aventon Aventure 2 electric bike review. With all of the other amazing features, it doesn’t come with a bike bell. Yes, I’m joking! However, it doesn’t seem like it would be hard for Aventon to add one!

Unboxing and Assembly Time and Instructions

The Aventon Aventure unboxing and assembly were pretty easy. Watch my Aventure assembly video for some tips and tricks.

Engwe Engine Pro 2.0 Full-Suspension Ebike (Better Than the Competition)

0

Choosing the perfect full-suspension e-bike can feel like navigating a dense forest with countless paths to choose from.

So, how do you make the right choice? With prices ranging from around $1200 to over $3000 for full-suspension fat tire e-bikes, the search for quality and the best features can be mind-numbing!

I’m Lisa from E-Biking Today, and I’m here to show you an affordable option that offers front and rear suspension in a surprisingly powerful 750Watt, 1200 W peak fat tire folding e-bike.

Check out the Engwe Engine Pro 2.0 full-suspension electric bike. In this review, I’ll give you the pros and cons of this competitive bike and tell you what you need to know before you buy. Plus, find out how the Engine Pro 2.0 is better than the most popular e-bike in its price range.

So, let’s dive into the features and performance of this impressive full-suspension electric bike to see why it stands out in the crowded market.

Pros of the Engwe Engine Pro 2.0

Engwe Engine Pro 2.0 Full Suspension Ebike
Engwe Engine Pro 2.0 Full Suspension Ebike!

Powerful Motor

The Engine Pro 2.0 features a 1200W peak and 750W rated hub motor. This powerful motor allowed for strong acceleration and my ability to easily tackle steep hills, making it ideal for hilly environments and variable terrain. Going uphill on pedal assist level one, I reached 18mph without breaking a sweat. Using the thumb throttle, I reached 20.3 mph on the same hill.

75 Newton meters of Torque

The higher the torque, the better the performance in terms of speed and the ability to handle rough terrain. And this adventure e-bike had plenty of speed! Using pedal assist I quickly sped up over 26mph on a flat, paved road. And, even on challenging surfaces, it was a comfortable and responsive ride.

Long Battery Life

Equipped with a 52V16 Ah Lithium-Ion battery, the Engine Pro 2.0 can travel up to 68 miles (109.4 km) in pedal-assist mode and about 30 miles using full throttle. Engwe tested this range with a 165-pound rider (75kg) on flat terrain. After my first 15-mile ride, there wasn’t any noticeable loss of range.

This long battery life is perfect for extended rides and commuting without worrying about frequent recharges. This offers peace of mind and convenience for long-distance riders.

Beefy Fat Tires

Riding over dirt, rocks, and bumps was easy thanks to the knobby off-road tires. These 4-inch tires made my ride feel stable and comfortable.

Engwe Engine Pro Front Fat Tire and headlight
The Engwe Engine Pro 2 has 4-inch fat tires that conquer rough terrain!

Impressive Speed

Even with a heavier dual suspension, this e-bike can reach a maximum speed of 20MPH (32KPH) in throttle mode and 28MPH (45KPH) in pedal-assist mode. These high speeds make it suitable for riders who need to cover larger distances in a shorter amount of time.

Full-Suspension

Engwe states that 87% of “bumps” are reduced with the dual suspension, so we set out to test this. There’s no doubt that the dual suspension made our rides comfortable. We didn’t feel any significant jarring or discomfort. This is pretty spectacular for an ebike in this price range!

Engine Pro 2.0 Rear Suspension
Engine Pro 2.0 Rear Suspension

Torque Sensor

Okay, I was excited about this feature… a powerful fat tire folding ebike sporting a torque sensor! With no starting delay, the Engine Pro moves forward smoothly and naturally. In fact, the sensor is so ready to kick in that putting any pressure on the pedals tells the bike it’s time to go!

On with the pros of the Engwe Engine Pro…

Reliable Braking System

The hydraulic disc brakes with 160 mm rotors were responsive and provided good stopping power at every intersection and crossroad.

Versatile Transmission System

The bike features a Shimano Altus 8-speed transmission. The gears shifted smoothly and offered more control.  I adjusted gears easily to match different terrains and riding conditions.

Price Point

Even with its advanced features, like the torque sensor, powerful motor, and full suspension, the Engine Pro 2.0 is on the lower end of the price spectrum. The $1399 retail cost is a winner for budget-conscious buyers, making it more accessible to everyone.

Finally, a few other helpful features:

Yes! The Engine Pro 2.0 is also a folding ebike you can easily transport to your favorite bike trails and terrain. Here are the dimensions to help you decide if it will fit in your car or storage space: 40.9 inches long by 21.6 inches wide by 33.0 inches high.

There’s also an easy-to-read LCD display, front and rear lights, anti-slip grips, and telescoping handlebars which helped me enjoy my ride.

Easy to Read LCD Display

Cons of the Engine Pro 2.0

Motor Noise

I wouldn’t mind if the motor were a bit quieter. But it is a powerful electric bike and will never be mistaken for a standard bike!

Limited Rider Heights

Marc, at 5’8 inches, is a better fit on the Engine Pro, as it’s most suitable for riders between 5.4 and 6.2 inches (165-190 cm). This height limitation excludes potential users who are either shorter or taller, reducing its ability to accommodate more riders.

Battery Key

You’ll need to use the key to turn on the bike. I don’t mind this as it helps protect it from thieves. However, the keyhole is harder to find since it’s underneath the frame. And, the key locks into the frame while the bike is on. Then, you must turn off the battery and remove the key. This was a complaint of the popular Lectric XP3.

Engine Pro 2.0
The Engine Pro battery key remains on the underside of the frame while riding.

Competition Comparison

Let’s look at how the Engwe Engine Pro’s power and all-terrain features are better than the Lectric XP3 Long-Range, a popular folding ebike. I was surprised that the Engine Pro 2.0 had so much to offer compared to the XP3:

  • A 750W /1200-watt peak motor compared to a 500W/1000 W peak motor.
  • 75 Newton meters of torque as opposed to 55.
  • 52-volt lithium-ion battery compared to a 48 volt.
  • Dual suspension compared to limited front suspension.
  • And 4-inch fat tires as opposed to 3-inch tires.

Despite its popularity, the Lectric XP3 Long-Range doesn’t measure up to the new Engine Pro.

What You Need to Know Before You Buy

Unboxing and Assembly

Box with packaged electric bike.
Unboxing the Engine Pro 2.0 E-Bike requires snipping off and removing the packaging you see here.

Unboxing the e-bike was typical with several pieces to snip off and unwrap.

But I’m not going to lie… at first, I was a little bummed when I discovered I had to assemble the steering tube, rear rack and fender, and rear brake light. I expected to install the front tire and fender, pedals, and headlight as I do on most review e-bikes. However, thanks to the Engwe assembly video, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy assembly was. It just takes a little more time, about an hour or slightly more.

What you'll need to assemble for the Engwe Engine Pro 2.
Here’s what you’ll need to assemble for the Engwe Engine Pro 2.

Maximum Load

The maximum load capacity is 330 lbs (149.4 kilograms ). While sufficient for most riders, heavier riders or those carrying substantial cargo should consider how it will impact the bike’s performance.

Weight

The bike weighs 69.6 lbs (31.6 kg), which falls in the middle of most fat tire folding ebikes.

Let’s start with who this is NOT for: Riders who fear too much power and speed or have no interest in off-road terrain.

Pros of the Haoqi Squirrel Electric Folding Bike

Geared Hub Motor inside the rear wheel.

The Squirrel may have a 500-watt motor, but it feels like it peaks around 750 watts. When it takes off, it takes off fast! It offers strong performance and high speeds, making it easy to tackle hills and trails.

28mph Top Speed

Marc and I sped up to 20mph in seconds, using both pedal assist and throttle. But you can even unleash this bike to a top speed of 28 if you’re a thrill-seeker or daily commuter.

Half Twist Throttle

I liked the flexibility of the twist throttle. It allowed easy and intuitive speed control. Twist a little and you’ll pick up speed, twist a lot and you’ll take off! Be careful that you don’t twist it as you’re holding onto the handlebar.

Fat Tires

4 Inch Fat Tire
4-inch Fat Tire!

Marc enjoyed the Innova 20 X 4-inch tires. It made his ride feel solid and sturdy. Plus, there wasn’t any slipping and sliding on off-road terrain. If you want to ride fast but need a bit of security, these fat tires provide good traction and stability on uneven surfaces.

Lightweight Folding Frame

Haoqi Squirrel Folding E-Bike sitting outside of van
The Haoqi Squirrel folded up!

The foldable aluminum bike frame is relatively lightweight for a fat tire folding e-bike. Even though I’m a lightweight, I was able to fold all 62 pounds and lift it into our van, which suggests that most riders will have no problem handling it. It’s plenty compact, allowing for easy storage and transportation. The folded dimensions are 51.18″ x 10.24″ x 27.56″ truly offering compact convenience.

Shimano 7 Speed

The Shimano 14-28T Rear Cassette and derailleur provided smooth and reliable thumb shifting, allowing us to go from on-road to off-road easily.

Pedal Assist

Woman Riding the Haoqi Squirrel in a park.
Me riding the Haoqi Squirrel in the park!

5 pedal assist levels provided customizable assistance. Each level was noticeably stronger than the previous one making it easy to ride longer distances with less effort.

Payload Capacity

A 350-pound weight capacity is pretty substantial for an electric folding bike. So it should support most heavy riders and their cargo. Keep in mind that the total payload includes body weight and cargo on the rear rack.

Integrated Headlight

The high-lumen LED headlight was accessible from the handlebar remote, so it can be easily flipped on. This is an important safety feature for commuters!

Comfort and Design

Man sitting on the Haoqi Squirrel
Marc riding off-road on the Squirrel e-bike!

Hoaqi Ebike offers a wide comfort saddle that’s high capacity (holds a lot of weight) to go along with the bike’s heavy-duty 350-pound payload. It’s also a nice-looking ebike that’s offered in 3 cool colors.

Affordable

Retailing at $1299 and currently selling for only $899, the Haoqi Squirrel falls within more budgets. So it’s a good choice for first-time e-bike owners.

Cons of the Squirrel Electric Folding Bike

No Taillight

I would’ve liked to see an integrated taillight. Not only is it essential for safety, but an advantage to an electric bike should be to have a light switch on the handlebar control. Make sure to add a rear light, even if it’s battery-operated.

Hard-to-Read LCD Display

Although it shows important information like speed, battery charge, and pedal assist level, it was hard to read the tiny pedal assist level without reading glasses. So I could hardly tell what level I was on. Further, the display was already difficult to read in the sunlight.

Fixed Bike Front Fork

A lack of front suspension made the ride on rough terrain less comfortable than it could have been. I’m sure this helped Haoqi keep the cost down for you, but don’t expect to do any hardcore off-road riding without at least a suspension seatpost. Thankfully, the fat tires absorb small bumps and uneven terrain nicely.

What You Need to Know Before You Buy

Woman standing next to e-bike
Make sure you are tall enough and of at least average weight to ride the Squirrel ebike.

Size and Fit

First, know that I am only 5’1” and this bike is recommended for riders 5’4” to 6’8”.  I had no problem reaching the handlebars and could’ve lowered the saddle even more. However, I could tell I was too small to be riding this ebike because, when the speed kicked in hard, I could feel the front tire leave the ground. Marc, at 5’8″, didn’t experience this problem.

So, if you don’t want to accidentally pop a wheelie, make sure you follow Haoqi’s size and fit recommendations. It would also be best if you are of at least average weight.

Compare your measurements to the Squirrel’s.

  • Standover Height 28.35”
  • Recommended Ride Height 5’4” to 6’8”
  • Minimum Seat Height 26.77 inches
  • Maximum Seat Height 39.37 inches
  • Top Tube Length 24.80 Inches
  • Wheel base 42.13”

Unboxing and Assembly

Haoqi Squirrel Unboxed and Prepared for Assembly
Everything you’ll get with the Squirrel once unboxed.

I appreciated how little unpacking was needed. Pull off two big pieces of styrofoam from the top and there’s not much left to remove.

As for e-bike assembly, it’s fairly simple. However, the 3 small pages in the owner’s manual won’t be very helpful if you’re not experienced in building electric bikes. Use the following assembly tips along with the video and manual as needed.

E-Bike Assembly
Assemble the front tire correctly!
  1. Put on the front tire by first unscrewing and removing the metal bar. Remove the bolts on both sides of the tire and set the fork on the tire, placing the wheel cog in the middle of the brake pads. Keep the pronged metal washers facing inward and replace and tighten the outer bolts.
  2. Next, install the handlebar by unscrewing the bolts with a hex wrench, centering it, and re-tightening the bolts. Use pressure and try rotating the handlebars. They should not move. Make sure they are centered with the wheel and the electric cords are not pulled too tight.
  3. Preferably, use a little bike grease before attaching the pedals. Turn each pedal in the direction shown by the sticker.
  4. Then install the front fender and headlight. These instructions were completely left out of the manual. You should watch the video to get an idea of how to do this.

Brakes

Just a note here. Even though I prefer hydraulic brakes on an electric bike, I will say the Squirrel’s mechanical disc brakes were reliable and performed well. I stopped easily and quickly.

Who Is the Haoqi Squirrel Folding Ebike Best For?

Haoqi Squirrel Electric Folding Bike inside van
The Haoqi Squirrel Electric Folding Bike is easy to transport to your favorite bike trail.

The Squirrel is the best e-bike for you if you want a speedy, sturdy e-bike that folds up for storage or to put in your car. It’s also great if you’re concerned about lifting it, as other folding e-bikes can be incredibly heavy.

And, its current price of $899 is too good to pass up for a compact 4-inch fat bike that you can transport to ride on both trails and paved road roads.

However, it’s not the best electric folding bike for you if you’re under 5’4” or generally a lightweight like I am. And it’s not for riders who want a hardcore trail bike.

Wrap Up

In a nutshell, the Haoqi Squirrel electric folding bike is a great companion for anyone seeking an affordable, efficient, and fun way to navigate their daily adventures. Its impressive battery life, power, and fat tires ensure that every ride is carefree.

Whether you’re a commuter looking for an affordable and reliable way to beat the traffic, an urban dweller needing compact and convenient transportation, or an adventurer eager to explore new bike paths, the Squirrel has got you covered. So, grab your helmet and get ready to scurry through your city with ease and excitement—and enjoy your ride!

Why I Ride My Ebike in the Stio OPR Short- Lycra vs Spandex

0

I wish I had these ebike shorts sooner! I ride electric bikes every day and I’ve gotten sick and tired of yanking, pulling, and readjusting my shorts!

I just want to be comfortable and stay cool… but why do bike shorts have to be lycra or spandex?

When it comes to riding ebikes, the choice of clothing can significantly impact enjoyment, comfort, and performance. Lycra and spandex are popular choices among cyclists due to their flexibility and tight fit, but there’s a growing trend toward opting for more versatile and stylish options. And to be honest, what I’m about to show you is 10% spandex… but 110% better.

Now, you might call these baggies, bermudas, dungarees, outdoor wear, casual clothes, or just uh shorts. Regardless, wearing the right clothes when ebike riding is essential for ultimate enjoyment, comfort, and style.

I’m Lisa from E-Biking Today and, with the help of my husband Marc, I share what I’ve discovered about riding clothes for electric bike riders and the Stio OPR Short.

Read the important warning about the shorts under “Functionality”!

Here’s why Marc and I prefer the Stio OPR Short and casual wear over traditional Lycra or spandex when riding our ebikes.

The Lycra and Spandex Dilemma

woman yanking on spandex shorts
Spandex is tight and uncomfortable!

Lycra and spandex have long been the go-to materials for cycling apparel. These synthetic fabrics are prized for their ability to stretch and conform to the body, reducing wind resistance and providing a snug fit. They are designed to minimize chafing and maximize aerodynamics, making them ideal for competitive cycling.

However, there are several downsides to Lycra and spandex that make them less than ideal for everyday ebike riding:

Appearance

While Lycra and spandex are great for performance, they’re not exactly the most fashionable choices. The skin-tight fit isn’t suitable for casual wear, making it inconvenient for e-bikers who want to transition from riding to other activities without changing clothes.

Comfort

Lycra and spandex can feel restrictive and uncomfortable during long rides, especially in hot weather. They tend to trap sweat and heat, leading to discomfort and potential skin irritation.

Versatility

These materials are designed primarily for cycling, which limits their versatility. They’re not ideal for activities that require a broader range of motion or a different style of clothing.

And guess what, we don’t care about aerodynamics because we’re riding electric bikes and can go as fast as we want.

Why We Chose the Stio OPR Short

Marc wearing Stio OPR Shorts and the Essential Tee.
Marc is wearing Stio OPR Shorts and the Essential Tee.

Stio apparel offers a refreshing alternative to traditional cycling wear, combining comfort, style, and functionality. Here’s why we ride ebikes in the Stio OPR Short:

Comfort and Breathability

Made from a lightweight, quick-drying Schoeller stretch fabric, the Stio OPR Short provides excellent breathability. It’s 90% Nylon and 10% Spandex. So, it keeps moisture away from the skin, keeping us cool and dry even on hot days. The relaxed fit is super comfortable and I love that they don’t bunch up while riding, unlike Lycra or spandex. Additionally, the gusseted crotch offers easy mobility on the saddle and helps prevent chafing.

Versatile Design

The Men’s and Women’s OPR Short are designed for performance and casual wear. It features a sleek, minimalist design that looks great both on and off the bike. Marc’s favorite thing about the shorts is how easily he can transition from an ebike ride to a casual outing without feeling out of place.

Functionality

Woman standing over the Vvolt Alpha II Electric Bike in Stio OPR shorts and tank top
Wear apparel that keeps you cool while riding!

Despite its casual appearance, the OPR Short is packed with features that make it function perfectly for e-biking. Multiple storage pockets mean that we can easily hold our phones, keys, and ID wherever we ride or hike.

Then there’s the Stio® T-Lock snap and zippered fly closure. It’s so much easier to use than a typical button or snap. But heed this warning! Do Not pull to unsnap or you may break it like others have. Look carefully at the correct way to open and close it.

Further, Stio shorts are ventilated specifically for mountain biking. And they’re designed for a variety of mountain bike activities including long-distance rides and challenging climbs. So, we’re assured that they can handle ANY type of e-bike riding, even bikepacking!

l wear these shorts on both my Aventon Ramblas electric mountain bike and my commuter ebike.

Wondering what OPR stands for? The shorts are named after Old Pass Road, a gateway to popular downhill trails and singletrack cycling in Teton County, Wyoming.

Construction

Side view of woman wearing Stio OPR Shorts
We Ride Our Ebikes in Stio to move freely and stay cool and comfortable.

The Stio Short is made from lasting, high-quality 4-way stretch fabric. It can withstand the rigors of daily riding, including trail abuse and frequent washing, without losing its shape or performance. Its durable water-repellent finish handles unexpected weather conditions and makes dirt easy to brush off.

Not only is the contoured waist comfortable while riding, but there’s also built-in ventilation in the waistband,  pockets, and inseam. Let’s not forget the sturdy YKK zippers.

Eco-Friendly

Stio is committed to sustainable practices, and the OPR Short reflects this ethos. The fabric is made from recycled materials, reducing the environmental impact of your electric bike riding gear.

Packable

Although the OPR shorts aren’t labeled as packable, the lightweight material rolls up easily to fit into your bike bag.

Sizing and Fit

Lisa adjusting the waistband in the OPR short
You can easily adjust the waistband in the OPR short and wear the tank or tee tucked in or hanging out!

Knowing that the 11 ½ inch inseam would allow a good fit, Marc and I ordered the sizes that we typically wear. We agree that the shorts, tee, and tank top are true to size. At 5’1”, 110 lbs, I would’ve had a more snug fit in a size 2 short. But I decided to size up to a 4 to get a breezier, more adjustable fit. I just use the hook and loops at the waistband to tighten or let out as needed. Since you can customize the OPR shorts using these hooks, you should consider sizing up if you’re between two sizes.

Being petite, the shorts fall just above the knee and I roll them when I want a more tailored fit. I like how the length protects more of my legs while riding. If you’re of average height, they won’t be as long.

Women’s and Men’s Outdoor Apparel

Stio has a wide selection of what it calls “mountain life” clothing. The OPR shorts are just the beginning. I paired the Women’s OPR short in the color Sediment with the Divide Tank in Boundary Black Heather. Marc added a Divide Essential Tee in Mountain Shadow Heather with his Boundary Black OPR short. Both are made with lightweight, recycled fabric that is fast-drying and odor-controlling. We like that they’re soft and fit loosely but aren’t baggy.

Rad Power Bikes Radster Road Electric Bike- New Tech Makes it Easy to Hill Climb

0

Ready to find your perfect electric bike?

In this electric bike review, we’re checking out the all-new Rad Power Bikes Radster Road e-bike that conquers hills with its 750-watt hub motor and 100 Newton Meters Torque. The Radster Road impressed me with its smooth, fast, and powerful ride from the second I took off.

Rad has enhanced the motor, improved safety, extended the range, and used advanced technologies not found in previous e-bikes I’ve reviewed. And, could the Radster Road really be water-proof?!

You’ll find out in this review. I’ll show you the many pros of the Rad Power Radster Road E-bike I discovered. And there’s a con you must overcome. Plus, find out if this is the best ebike for you and what you need to know before buying!

Here we go!

The cool blue color of the Radster Road Electric Bike is only a glimpse of the new tech it offers.

The Pros of the Rad Power Radster Road

I’ve already mentioned how the Radster Road e-bike’s powerful 750W motor with 100 Nm of torque ensures strong acceleration and the ability to tackle steep inclines effortlessly. But how do other features help power up the Radster?

15Ah Advanced Semi-Integrated Battery

The high-capacity Safe Shield 720-watt-hour Samsung battery provides an extended riding range of 65+ miles per charge, ideal for commuting or long recreational rides. And its use of Samsung or LG cells and thermal-resistant technology ensures reliability and safety. Plus, I’m encouraged that the 2271 UL certification guarantees the battery meets strict safety standards, reducing the risk of overheating and other issues.

I also appreciate that it has a Rad Power Bikes smart charger compatible with many power outlets. Further, its smart features are designed to optimize charging times and battery health, enhancing the lifespan of the battery.

Torque Sensor with 28 Mph Pedal Assist

One of the features I loved most about the Radster Road was feeling in control. The torque sensor provided a more responsive, natural riding experience than a standard cadence sensor and adjusted the assistance based on my pedaling force. Along with 5 pedal assist levels and the zero assist option, I enjoyed customizing my support level and conserving battery life when full assistance wasn’t needed.

20 Mph Throttle

I’m a fan of the half-twist throttle. It provided an easy way to control speed without pedaling and gave me a quick burst of speed when needed.

Hydraulic Brake System

Tektro hydraulic disc brakes provided superior stopping power as always. This safety feature is helpful when riding downhill or in the rain. The consistent braking performance was also due to the large 180mm brake rotors and durable semi-metallic brake pads.

Hydraulic Disc Brakes
The Hydraulic Disc Brakes offered great stopping power (as seen in the video).

Switchable from Class 1 to 3

The ability to switch between different classes allows customization based on local regulations and personal preferences. Class 1 offers pedal assist only, Class 2 includes throttle assist up to 20 mph, and Class 3 provides pedal assist up to 28 mph. This feature makes the Radster Road electric bike versatile for various riding environments and needs. FYI… it ships in Class 2 status.

Rad Custom Color Display

The custom color display was easy to read and provided detailed information about speed, battery level, distance traveled, and other vital statistics. You can even see how much power the motor supplies as you pedal.

USB Port

I found the USB-C port on the left-side handlebar remote. Charging on the go keeps you connected to navigation tools or communication devices during your ride. The USB charge indicator, located on the display, indicates when your device is charging.

Chain Ring Cover

Woman sitting on Rad Power Bikes Radster Road Electric Bike
Radster Road Chain Ring Cover keeps the chain and your clothes clean!

This is worth mentioning as it’s one of the first things I noticed that was different about the Radster Road e-bike. A dual-sided chain ring cover protects the chain from damage and prevents clothing from getting caught. And, it looks nice!

SR Suntour Hydraulic Suspension

The hydraulic suspension fork with 80mm travel absorbed shocks and vibrations. So I wasn’t afraid to go over potholes and bumps in the road. The bike felt stable and I enjoyed being in control. For even more comfort, add the suspension seatpost I use.

Ergonomic Grips & Extended Handlebars

I liked the feel of the ergonomic grips and the wide, moderately swept-back handlebars made the bike easy to handle.

Rear Rack with 55 lb (25 kg) Carrying Capacity

Radster Rear Rack
The e-bike’s rear rack has a weight capacity of 55 lbs.

The solid rear rack helped me carry substantial groceries or other items, making the Radster Road electric bike practical for commuting and errands. The bike’s overall weight capacity of 320 lbs allows this extra cargo weight.

Shimano 8-speed Drivetrain & Shifter

The 8-speed thumb shifter allowed quick and precise gear changes, improving riding efficiency and control. I shifted through gears 4 to 8 to climb hills and control my ride.

Kenda Kwick 29″ Tires

The large 29″ X 2.2″ tires with puncture protection offered a smooth and stable ride, while the reflective strip enhanced visibility.

Kenda Tire

Bright Lights & Effective Turn Signals

The auto-on headlight, brake lights, and turn signals were bright enough to be effective. And it was nice to have a clear view of the turn signals on the display.

Rear brake light
Use the bright turn signal lights to stay visible and safe.

Padded Sport Saddle

With an anatomic cut-out and contoured sides, the saddle provided comfort and support and reduced pressure on sensitive areas.

Radster Road Contoured Saddle
Radster Road Contoured Saddle offers a comfortable ride.

One-Touch Security

Use a personal passcode or fob to lock your bike’s controls.

Additional Benefits

Full-coverage fenders, an adjustable kickstand, reflective alloy platform pedals, and a safe thru-axle front tire top off the featured benefits of the Radster Road ebike.

Waterproof

Finally, to top off the advanced technology of this e-bike… Yes, it’s Waterproof! I’m not kidding. Rad Power Bikes has built its 2024 models to, and I quote “withstand high-pressure, heavy water splashes”. I don’t think this means you can take a high-pressure water nozzle and shoot water at the Radster from every angle. But naturally occurring heavy rain falling from the sky? Enjoy!

Cons of the Radster Road

Bike Weight

At 74.5 lbs, the Radster is a bit heavier than other commuter e-bikes. Perhaps it can’t be helped with the advanced battery and tech. Just keep weight in mind if you plan to lift or transport it. Removing the battery will reduce the weight by 9 pounds.

Price

Although I think the Radster Road is worth its $2199 price, having a sizeable budget is another thing entirely. However, Rad Power offers a payment plan starting at $138 per month and I don’t think it’s even a question of whether this is worth your money if you’re a commuter or replacing your car.

Now, Here’s What You Need to Know Before You Buy

Unboxing & Assembly

Radster Road Shipping Box

Rad made unboxing the Radster easy. I removed the 4 white clips on the bottom of the box and the top slid off. The packaging was easy to unwrap, yet the bike was well-secured inside the shipping box.

Assembly wasn’t difficult and took about 40 minutes. The handlebar was screwed in place, the front tire was put on by removing and replacing the thru-axle, the pedals were twisted on and tightened, and the front light and fenders were attached and secured.

Size & Fit

Woman standing over the Regular size Radster frame
The Regular size Radster Road frame fits almost every rider 4’11”-6’4″” on two frame sizes: Regular and Large

Having two frame sizes, the Radster Road will fit almost everyone 4’11” to 6’4”. The Step-over height is just under 20” on the Regular frame but substantially higher at 24 inches on the Large frame. So, when choosing the correct frame size, compare the stepover height as well as the reach and seat height.

I appreciate that Rad shows you what tools you need and how to measure for the correct frame size (see Specs & Sizing).

Is This the Best Electric Bike for You?

The Radster Road electric bike is an excellent choice for a wide range of riders due to its versatile features and benefits.

Rad Power Radster Road E-Bike in front of green bushes
This electric bike has several new tech advanced features plus 100 Newton meters of torque and an advanced lithium battery system.

As a commuter, you’ll appreciate the high-capacity 720 Wh battery, which provides an extended riding range, allowing for longer distances without frequent recharges.

If you are an adventure seeker, you’ll benefit from the powerful 750W motor and SR Suntour hydraulic suspension fork, ensuring strong acceleration and a smooth ride on bumpy terrain. Additionally, if this is you, you might also like the off-road Radster Trail e-bike.

Tech-savvy riders will enjoy the Rad custom color display, providing detailed ride information, and the USB-C port for charging devices on the go.

Additionally, the pedal assist system with a torque sensor and multiple levels of support is perfect for fitness-conscious riders looking to stay active.

Overall, the Radster Road is suited for anyone seeking a reliable, high-performance, and adaptable e-bike. Whether you’re commuting, exploring new areas, or enjoying leisurely rides, this bike offers new tech features and benefits to enhance your riding experience. Therefore, it’s an ideal choice for a diverse range of riders.

May you love the Radster Road electric bike (or the Radster Trail) as much as I do. Enjoy your ride!

I’m Lisa from E-Biking Today and I’m excited to share what I’ve learned about the VVolt Alpha II electric bike from my review and ride experience.

Woman standing over the Vvolt Alpha II Electric Bike

Pros of the Alpha II

The Gates CDS Belt

With a Gates SideTrack Belt, The Alpha was a fun, smooth ride! But this belt drive offered so much more…. For starters, it was super quiet! Keep watching to find out why a Gates CDS, or Carbon Drive System, is so desirable.

Belt Drive with Motor
Belt Drive with Motor

Lightweight

The Alpha II weighs only 44 lbs, so it was easy to pick up, nimble, and amazing to ride (watch the video to see in action).

20-45 Mile Range

Although this is a typical range for a 375-watt battery, it’s even better on this bike. You will get more miles on a single charge on the Alpha II simply because it weighs less than the average e-bike. In general, the range will depend on terrain, the level of assistance used, and more.

Shimano Hydraulic Disc Brakes

Easy to maintain, the Shimano 160mm hydraulic brakes made it easy to stop. I’d expect these disc brakes to be reliable in most weather and road conditions.

Shimano Hydraulic Disk Brakes
Shimano Hydraulic Disk Brakes

Throttle

The addition of a thumb throttle is definitely an upgrade to the original Vvolt Alpha. And it’s on-demand. So, I was thrilled to pick up speed quickly and smoothly to 19mph. Additionally, the throttle can be removed, making it a Class 1 ebike when needed.

The throttle is also important as a power option since this is a single-gear bike. So, when I needed assistance getting up a hill, the throttle provided it.

Swept-back Handlebars and Ergonomic Grips

I loved the easy-to-reach handlebars and soft grips. They added to the already natural feel of the ride and helped me sit upright since they were closer to my body.

Swept-back Handlebars & Ergonomic Grips
Swept-back Handlebars & Ergonomic Grips make the ride more comfortable.

Step-Through Frame

I got on and off the bike quickly. However, the step-through height of 25 to 26.5 inches, depending on the frame size, is higher than some. So, if you have a disability or injury, make sure it’s not too high for you.

Puncture-Resistant Tires with Reflective Sidewall

The tires were nimble and provided a smooth ride. The reflective stripe kept me more visible.

Integrated Lighting

Putting safety first, Vvolt added a large front light and rear light for better visibility.

Integrated Front Light
Integrated Front and Rear Lights help you stay safe!

UL Certified

The Alpha II is UL Certified 2849, so it meets important safety standards. The battery also meets UL certification 2271.

Simple Functions

There’s not a lot to get caught up on. The display is simple and you can reach all important functions with your left hand. And there are no gears to mess with.

Potential Cons of the Alpha II

The Saddle

Four different riders tested the saddle and we all agreed it might not be comfortable enough for long rides. This isn’t a deal breaker and it could be a perfect fit for you. If it’s not, there are a ton of bike seat options, so it shouldn’t be a big deal to find the best saddle for your new e-bike.

Next,  It Doesn’t Fit Riders Under 5 Feet

I wish this nimble e-bike fit shorter riders. With 3 frame sizes, it’s not unreasonable to expect it to fit riders 4’10” and up.

Single Gear

This could be a concern for some. But, the Alpha II is lightweight, nimble, and plenty fast with 5 pedal assist levels and a capable throttle. So, I didn’t miss gears AT all.

Last, although the screen is easy to understand, it’s hard to see in sunlight.

What to Know Before You Buy

Motor & Pedal Assist

I was surprised the Alpha II went uphill quickly, being only a 350-watt hub motor ebike. Its lightweight frame and slender battery helped account for this. But the 5 pedal assist levels made it surprisingly easy to hill climb. I efficiently went up a steep hill on Level 4, riding up to 19.5 miles per hour and only pushing it to Level 5 at the top of the hill. I was pleased to discover how much power and speed this e-bike accomplished.

Unboxing & Assembly

This was super easy and quick… I assembled the bike in about 20 minutes. Take a look…

Use this link to help with assembly. Use the manual and video together to make the assembly snappy.

Size & Fit

I like that this electric bike fits almost everyone. At 5’1” I just made the cut for the recommended 5-foot minimum… and there’s an XL frame for riders 5’ 10” to 6’3”. Always check your inseam and reach measurements to help determine which size is best. If you’re on the very top of one size range, you should consider sizing up.

5'1" woman standing over step-through frame
As a 5’1″ rider, I had a modest amount of room when standing over the step-through frame.

Colors

Vvolt E-Bikes offers two colors… Reef, a brilliant coral, and Black Pearl.

Vvolt Alpha II Reef Color
The Vvolt Alpha II in the stunning color of Reef!

Price

At $1799, I’d say the Alpha II price is fair and expected, due to the more expensive belt drive and lightweight frame.

What’s Special About the Gates Carbon Belt Drive?

One of the standout benefits of a belt drive is its cleanliness. Unlike traditional chain systems that require lubrication and tend to gather greasy dirt, the belt drive remains clean, keeping your hands, clothes, and surroundings free from grime.

The smoothness of the Carbon Drive system is another key advantage. By eliminating the metal-to-metal contact that chains rely on, The Gates belt drive delivers an exceptionally smooth riding experience that needs to be felt to be fully appreciated. It certainly made my test ride easy.

Riding with the Gates Sidetrack belt is a quiet experience. This lack of noise added to the overall enjoyment and serenity of my ride.

In terms of weight, the belt drive system is impressively light. Comprising just two sprockets and a belt, it weighs less than a typical chain alone, contributing to the bike’s overall lightweight feel.

Durability is another strong suit of the Carbon Drive belt. Unlike chains, which stretch over time and require re-tensioning, this belt does not stretch, eliminating the need for adjustments.

Plus, it’s engineered to shed mud, dirt, snow, and other debris. This means a more reliable ride in all conditions.

When it comes to longevity, belt drives outshine chains significantly. Tests have shown that belts can last more than four times longer than chains.

It’s also comforting to know that the Gates Carbon Drive System meets or surpasses the EN 14766 industry standard, which is the same rigorous benchmark set for chain drive systems.

Finally, Carbon belt drives maintain efficiency throughout their lifespan. So, you’ll get a reliable and smooth performance on every ride.
