Mokwheel Basalt ST 2.0 Review: Mobile Power Station Ebike?!

When you’re shopping for a fat tire electric bike, a few big questions come up:

  • Can this e-bike handle rugged trails and city streets?
  • Is the motor powerful enough for hills and tough terrain?
  • How far can I go before needing a recharge?
  • And ultimately… is it worth the money?

I’m Lisa at E-Biking Today and we’re taking an up close look at the Mokwheel Basalt ST 2.0. We’ll answer these questions and more. But I was also surprised to find intuitive design I didn’t expect for a bike in this price range. For one, can you say “mobile power station” ebike?! Check it out!

First Impressions: Built Like a Tank, Styled for Adventure

Right away, the Mokwheel Basalt ST 2.0 stands out in looks. It appears rugged but refined—a bike built for adventure but smart enough for city life. The thick 26×4.0″ puncture-resistant fat tires, the internal battery housing, and the clean frame lines all point to sound engineering.

The aluminum alloy frame felt strong without excess weight, although the bike still tips the scales at a hefty 80 pounds. There is some trade-off for strength, power, and range.

Power and Performance: Real-World Strength

Motor

At its core, the Basalt ST 2.0 is driven by a 750W continuous motor that can peak at 1100W when needed. It’s backed by over 90Nm of torque, which is what really matters when you’re climbing steep hills, riding on dirt trails and bumpy paths, or hauling heavy loads on the rear rack.

This motor is not just for gentle park rides. It’s designed to work hard and move fast, whether you’re exploring mountain trails or commuting across town.

Speed

Even on steep hill climbs, I reached 19-20mph using pedal assist Level 5.  Thus, reaching this Class 2 speed limit on mostly flat terrain was easily managed. Plus, the thumb throttle let me accelerate quickly without pedaling, which was especially useful when starting from a stop, crossing through an intersection, or just giving your legs a rest. You should know, however, that you can adjust the bike’s speed to 28mph or more.

Range and Battery: Serious Mileage, Flexible Charging

The Mokwheel Basalt ST 2.0 is powered by a 48V 19.6Ah UL-certified battery, offering an advertised range of 60 to 80 miles per charge.

In real-world use:

  • Low pedal assist levels can stretch you close to 70–80 miles.
  • Throttle-heavy riding and using high pedal assist levels can knock the range down to about half that.

Charging is handled by a 48V 3A charger, meaning faster charging than bikes that only come with a 2A standard charger. And with Mokwheel’s Intelligent Energy Management, powered by Texas Instruments BMS chips, you can expect to get:

  • Better battery efficiency
  • Longer lifespan
  • Built-in protections for safe, reliable power

This level of battery management is rare in e-bikes at this price point.

Explore Performance: Where Engineering Meets Intuition

Interactive Sensors: Torque + Cadence

Mokwheel didn’t skimp when it came to rider experience. Instead of just a basic cadence sensor, the Basalt ST 2 uses a hybrid system that includes:

  • A Torque sensor (measuring how hard you pedal)
  • A Cadence sensor (measuring how fast you pedal)

This combination allows the bike to adapt to you. It gave me a smooth, consistent boost and a dynamic, natural ride feel, which is what I love about torque sensors. The Basalt ST responded instantly to my pedaling pressure.

Display and Controls: Simple, Smart, Secure

Another appreciated intuitive design is the detachable HD color display. Yes, it shows the basics like:

  • Current speed
  • Battery level
  • PAS level
  • Trip and odometer readings

But it’s not just informative—it’s smart. Remove the screen and the bike powers down automatically, adding a layer of theft prevention. I didn’t have to find a key or unplug wires to disable the bike. You might want to turn up the brightness on the display to make it easier to read in bright sunlight.

Mobile Power Station- Solar Options

Now, here’s a unique feature you might find super handy. The Mokwheel Basalt ST 2.0 has a built-in power station for use with an inverter and solar panels (check out Mokwheel’s foldable ones). Plus, you can use this mobile power station for other electronic accessories like your phone, camera, and speaker. Mokwheel even claims it can be used to charge a laptop or TV, which could open up a world of possibilities while camping or RVing.

You will need to purchase an inverter, portable solar panels (AMZN), or other accessories to benefit from this unique feature.

Ride Comfort and Handling: Smooth Over Everything

Overall, the Basalt ST 2.0 ride was comfortable and smooth. I was happy to be able to adjust the stem so I could sit straight up and the seat offers a good balance between soft and good for longer riding. I wouldn’t mind some regular ergonomic grips… the plastic bubbles in the middle look nice but leave something to be desired comfort wise.

Suspension and Tires

The 110mm front fork absorbed a good amount of shock on bumpy trails, dips, and gravel roads. It’s adjustable, so you can tune the stiffness depending on whether you’re commuting or tackling rugged off-road paths.

And, the 26×4.0″ fat tires with fenders further cushioned the ride on both ci  ty streets and trails. I felt confident and in control. And I’d expect it to grip well on:

  • Loose sand
  • Snow
  • Mud
  • Rocky trails
  • City streets

Smooth Gear Transitions

The Basalt ST 2.0 uses a 7-speed Shimano derailleur and 52T The gear changes were smooth and reliable, letting me control how much effort to put in. Because it’s a heavier fat bike, I spent more time in lower gears, especially on hills.

Braking and Safety: Built to Protect

Lighting and Signals

Mokwheel went the extra mile with integrated safety lighting:

  • Dual-bulb front headlight for powerful night-time visibility.
  • Rear brake lights that illuminate when you slow down.
  • Turn signals on the rear, activated by handlebar buttons.

Hydraulic Disc Brakes

Safety is non-negotiable. The TEKTRO hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors provided strong, responsive braking and there was minimal hand effort during fast stops.

Pedal Assist and Throttle: Freedom of Choice

You can ride the Basalt ST 2.0 however you want:

  • Use one of 5 pedal assist levels for a natural, fitness-friendly experience with smooth electric support.
  • Or hit the thumb throttle for an effortless, scooter-style ride when you need a break or fast acceleration.

The throttle picked up fast, even off-road (see 10507) and each assist level picks up the right amount of speed. You can set your desired speeds for each level in the display itself.

This flexibility makes it ideal for riders of all fitness levels and riding styles.

Size and Fit

Here’s a quick breakdown :

  • Frame: Step-Thru design with a step-over of less than 17 inches
  • Standard Size: 5’2” to 6’4”
  • Large Size: 5’6” to 6’8”
  • Bike Weight: 80 lbs
  • Payload Capacity: 350 lbs

It’s designed to carry serious weight, making it suitable for heavier riders or carrying cargo.

Just a note: There aren’t a lot of e-bikes that fit riders as tall as 6’8”. Now, I’m on the other end of the spectrum. At 5’1”, I was comfortable except for the reach was a bit too long. Just make sure to check out the detailed size and fit measurements on the Mokwheel website.

Final Verdict: Who Is the Mokwheel Basalt ST 2.0 For?

If you’re looking for an electric fat tire bike that:

  • Packs serious motor power
  • Handles long distances easily
  • Offers natural, smart pedal assist
  • Delivers real versatility for both off-road and city riding
  • Offers inverter and solar options with a mobile power bank
