It can carry up to 418 pounds, has a compact short-tail frame, uses a 750W direct-drive motor, and comes with tech features I normally would not expect to find on a cargo e-bike in this price range — including traction control, Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control, regenerative braking, GPS tracking, Apple Find My support, and optional rearview radar.
That sounds impressive, but it also raises a big question:
Does all of that high-tech help actually make the Segway MUXI easier to ride, especially when it is loaded with cargo?
I tested the MUXI with groceries, extra weight, hills, braking, throttle use, and the smart motor features to find out whether this compact cargo e-bike is practical, manageable, and worth considering for everyday errands.
And the biggest surprise came on a downhill.
The bike actually slowed itself down, almost like a car shifting into low gear.
That feature alone changed how I looked at the MUXI.

What Is the Segway MUXI?

The Segway MUXI is a compact short-tail cargo e-bike designed for riders who want more utility than a regular e-bike, but do not want the size and bulk of a traditional long-tail cargo bike.
It is not one of those stretched-out family cargo bikes that takes up half the garage.
It is also not a huge front-loading cargo bike.
Instead, the MUXI is only about 67 inches long, which gives it a footprint closer to a cruiser-style e-bike. But Segway has built a strong rear utility rack directly into the frame and designed the bike to accept different cargo and passenger accessories.
That compact size is one of the most important things about this bike.
A full-sized cargo e-bike can be great once you are riding, but backing it out of a garage, parking it, maneuvering between cars, or turning around on a narrow path can be intimidating.
The MUXI is for someone who wants cargo-bike capability without feeling like they are managing a small boat.
Who Is the Segway MUXI For?

The Segway MUXI makes the most sense for riders who want to replace short car trips, run errands, carry groceries, transport a child, or use an e-bike for everyday utility.
It may be especially interesting for:

Segway lists the rider-height range at approximately 4 feet 8 inches to 6 feet, and the step-through frame makes it easier to get on and off without swinging a leg over the rear cargo area.
At 5’1”, I found the riding position comfortable. I could lower the seat enough to feel stable when carrying cargo, or raise it higher for more natural pedaling.
There is also an optional dropper seatpost, which could make quick saddle-height changes much easier.
That said, height range is only a starting point. Inseam, arm length, saddle position, and comfort when stopping all matter.
Cargo Capacity: Can the MUXI Replace Short Car Trips?

This is where the MUXI’s compact appearance becomes a little misleading.
Segway gives the MUXI a total payload rating of 418 pounds, including rider and cargo. The rider limit is 265 pounds, the integrated rear rack is rated for 121 pounds, and the optional front basket can hold up to 33 pounds.
That opens up several practical setups.
You could add the passenger kit on the rear. You could place groceries in the middle basket, a bag in the front, and larger items on the rear rack. Or you could set it up as an errand bike with panniers while keeping the rear platform available for bulky cargo.
For my test, I loaded the bike with a cooler, groceries, and 40 pounds of weight on the rear.
That kind of load can make a bike feel unstable, especially when stopping, starting, or turning at low speeds. So the real question is not just whether the frame can hold the weight.
The question is whether the bike still feels predictable once the weight is there.
With heavy cargo on the rear rack, the ride felt steady.
The 20-inch wheels help keep the cargo lower to the ground, which reduces that top-heavy feeling you can get on taller cargo bikes. The 3-inch-wide tires also give the bike a stable stance and a larger contact patch.
For errands, grocery runs, or carrying daily gear, this setup makes a lot of sense.
Motor Performance: 750W Direct-Drive Power

The Segway MUXI uses a 750W direct-drive rear motor with up to 80 Nm of torque.
In its standard Class 2 configuration, it provides pedal assist and throttle power up to 20 mph. Segway also lists a 23 mph pedal-assist setting outside California, while the throttle remains limited to 20 mph.
A direct-drive motor works differently from the smaller geared hub motors found on many e-bikes. There are no internal reduction gears inside the motor, which helps keep the ride quiet and allows the motor to provide electronic braking and energy recovery.
But direct-drive motors can also feel different during the first few feet of acceleration, especially on a heavy or loaded bike.
From a stop, the MUXI felt strong but not abrupt on flat ground.
That is important on a cargo e-bike.
A bike that jerks forward the moment you touch the throttle may feel fun during a quick test ride, but it is not necessarily what you want when carrying a child, groceries, or an extra 50 to 100 pounds of cargo.
On the MUXI, the power felt controlled enough to be useful rather than jumpy.
Hill Climbing and Throttle Use

On my test hill, the Segway MUXI handled the climb well in the higher assist levels. In the lowest assist levels, I did need to pedal harder on longer or steeper uphill sections.
That is not surprising for a heavy single-speed cargo e-bike.
This is also where the throttle becomes very useful.
The throttle can help you get moving before pedaling, especially when starting uphill or pulling into traffic. On a cargo bike, that first few feet of movement can be the trickiest part. The throttle helps get the bike balanced and rolling.
For riders carrying cargo or a passenger, that can make the MUXI feel more manageable.
Cadence Sensor, Adaptive Power, and Algorithm 2.0
One thing that may surprise some riders is that the Segway MUXI does not use a torque sensor. It uses a cadence sensor.
A torque sensor measures how hard you push on the pedals. A cadence sensor mainly detects whether the cranks are turning.
On some e-bikes, cadence sensors can feel delayed or abrupt. You begin pedaling, nothing happens for a moment, and then the motor suddenly kicks in.
That kind of response can feel awkward on a cargo bike.
Segway tries to smooth this out with what it calls Adaptive Power and Algorithm 2.0. It is still cadence-based, but the system is designed to make the assist feel smoother, less abrupt, and more controlled.
In the lower assist levels, the MUXI’s motor engaged smoothly without lunging forward. In the upper assist levels, I felt stronger motor engagement around a quarter turn of the pedal.
When I stopped pedaling, the motor faded out smoothly.
That response matters. On a cargo bike, you may be pedaling through a tight turn, riding near pedestrians, or balancing cargo at low speed. In those moments, smooth power delivery is more important than maximum acceleration.
For cautious riders, the lower assist levels are where this bike feels most controlled.
Smart Motor Features: What Makes the MUXI Different

The direct-drive motor supports several unusual smart features that help separate the MUXI from many other cargo e-bikes.
Traction Control
The MUXI includes traction control, which can monitor wheel behavior and adjust motor output when it detects a loss of grip.
For riders dealing with loose surfaces, wet pavement, or extra cargo weight, that added control may be helpful.
Hill Start Assist
Hill Start Assist is designed to help hold the bike in position when stopped on an incline, giving you time to prepare before starting again.
This is especially useful on a loaded cargo bike because starting on a hill can be stressful. You are balancing the bike, holding the brakes, positioning the pedals, and trying not to roll backward.
Hill Descent Control
Hill Descent Control was the feature I was most excited to test.
Once enabled in the app, the motor can create resistance on a downhill section to help regulate speed.
And this was the feature that surprised me the most.
Going downhill, I could feel the bike slow itself down, almost like a car going into low gear. I still had to pay attention and use the brakes when needed, but the bike felt more controlled than I expected.
For riders who avoid hills because they worry about speed, braking, or managing a loaded bike, this feature could make a meaningful difference.
Kinetic Energy Recovery and Regenerative Braking
The MUXI also uses kinetic energy recovery, which allows the motor to act like a generator during braking and send some energy back to the battery.
I would not buy this bike expecting regenerative braking to give me huge extra range. But it may help with downhill control and could reduce some wear on the brake pads.
For me, the real benefit was not “free miles.”
It was control.
Braking and Stability
For stopping power, the Segway MUXI uses two-piston hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors at both wheels.
That is an appropriate setup for a bike designed to carry this much weight.
During my braking test, the brakes felt strong and easy to control. The bike remained stable, even with cargo loaded.
This is important because cargo e-bikes need more than just motor power. They also need predictable stopping power.
A bike that can carry 418 pounds needs brakes that inspire confidence.
The MUXI does well here.
Ride Comfort: No Suspension, But Stable Tires

The Segway MUXI does not have front suspension. It uses a rigid fork, so the 3-inch tires and saddle are responsible for absorbing most of the road vibration.
On smooth streets and bike paths, the ride felt comfortable and controlled.
On broken pavement, dips, or potholes, I felt less impact than expected because of the lower-to-the-ground cargo tires.
Still, this is not a full-suspension adventure bike. It is best understood as an urban utility e-bike built for pavement, bike paths, errands, and local trips.
If you ride on rough roads every day, the lack of suspension is something to think about.
Single-Speed Drivetrain: Simple, But With a Tradeoff
The MUXI uses a single-speed chain drivetrain with no derailleur.
That means there are no gears to shift and fewer drivetrain parts to adjust. For riders who want simplicity, that is a plus.
You just get on and ride.
But there is another side to that simplicity.
If the battery runs out, you are pedaling a nearly 73-pound cargo bike with one mechanical gear. Add groceries or a passenger, and riding home without electrical assistance could become difficult.
Thankfully, the throttle helps a lot when getting started. But the motor and battery are not just bonuses on this bike.
They are central to how the MUXI is meant to be ridden.
Battery, Range, and Charging

The Segway MUXI uses a removable 48V, 717Wh battery.
Segway advertises a maximum range of up to 80 miles, with an estimated charging time of approximately 6.5 hours. The battery is rated IPX7 for water resistance, while the bike body is rated IPX5.
As always, advertised range depends on ideal conditions.
Cargo weight, rider weight, hills, temperature, tire pressure, speed, throttle use, and assist level will all affect your actual range.
During my rides, I traveled 15.5 miles, used all levels of assist, climbed moderate hills and one steep hill, played with the tech quite a bit, and finished with 67% battery life and an app-estimated 53 miles remaining.
Based on that test, most riders should have more than enough range for daily errands and local riding using moderate assist.
Display, App, GPS, and Security Features

The MUXI includes a color TFT display that automatically adjusts brightness and can show your speed, remaining range, battery level, assist setting, navigation, and incoming call notifications.
Through the Segway Mobility App, you can adjust riding settings, check the battery, share access to the bike, install updates, activate Lost Mode, and use remote locking features.
The MUXI also supports:

The optional rearview radar can warn you about vehicles, cyclists, or pedestrians approaching from behind. I liked that the radar notified me on screen about a vehicle close behind and flashed the rear brake light to alert traffic.
I do wish the notification stayed on the screen a little longer so it would be harder to miss.
These smart features do not replace a strong physical lock, but they add useful layers of awareness and security that most cargo bikes in this price range do not offer.
Lights and Visibility

The integrated lighting system includes a 600-lumen headlight and a rear light that gets brighter when you brake.
That brake-light behavior is a nice safety feature, especially on a utility bike that may be carrying cargo or moving at city speeds.
One omission is built-in turn signals.
On a high-tech e-bike with app features, radar support, GPS tracking, and smart motor control, built-in turn signals would have made sense.
Accessories and Setup Options

The built-in cup holder is included, but most of the cargo equipment you see on a fully equipped MUXI is sold separately.

There is a lot to like about this compact cargo e-bike.
First, it delivers serious cargo capacity without the extra length of a traditional cargo bike.
Second, the step-through frame and low 20-inch wheels make it feel more approachable than many larger cargo e-bikes.
Third, the integrated rear utility rack is strong and practical.
Fourth, the hydraulic brakes are appropriately sized for the job.
And finally, the direct-drive motor comes with features I have not seen combined on many bikes at this price, especially Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist, traction control, regenerative braking, and smart security tools.
The MUXI feels like a cargo e-bike built for riders who want capability, but also want help managing that capability.
What Could Be Better
The Segway MUXI also has tradeoffs.
It has no suspension, so rough roads may feel firmer than they would on a suspension e-bike.
The single-speed drivetrain keeps things simple, but it also makes the bike more dependent on the electrical system.
Most cargo accessories cost extra.
And riders who prefer the direct response of a torque sensor may need time to decide whether Segway’s adaptive cadence system feels natural enough.
The MUXI is not perfect, but its strengths are clear.
It is compact, capable, high-tech, and surprisingly controlled when loaded.

It may also appeal to newer riders, cautious riders, or smaller riders because the frame is compact and low.
But its weight still needs to be respected. At nearly 73 pounds, this is not a lightweight e-bike. You will feel that weight when walking it, parking it, or managing it with cargo.
The feature that mattered most to me was not the advertised 80-mile range or even the 418-pound payload rating.
It was Hill Descent Control.
That feature made the MUXI feel like a capable cargo bike designed to help the rider manage more weight with more confidence.
The Segway MUXI does not eliminate every challenge that comes with owning a cargo bike. But it does package a lot of utility into a compact design that takes up less room than a traditional cargo hauler.
For riders who want more carrying capacity, more tech, and less bulk, the MUXI could be the right middle ground.
